I just found and finished reading Larry Charlot's write up about buying a C-25. Looks like I purchased everything he warned us about! Ealry model with worst headroom, no poptop, motor mounted on the wrong side, and the list goes on. Oh, the humanity of it!
Now, where is that tutitorial on how to repair bolt holes in the transom?

Some folks here like the motor on port. (I wasn't one of them--I liked mine on starboard where the tiller handle was toward the center.) One of my criteria was the cockpit fuel locker that appeared in the early 80s. We've talked all about the pop-top, and the opportunity you have to install a cabin-top traveler--something that would make the cockpit much more comfortable.

Yep, Confetti has almost all of the things to avoid except she has a pop top. and I love everything about her!!! None of them are show stopper IMHO. just preferences...... (OK, I would like the newer gas tank locker, but having it in the dumpster still works just fine). As far as the motor being on the port side, well, I repectfully submit that I like it better there for just the reasons StinkPotter does not like it there. I think the handle is easier for me to get to when its towards the outboard side. But again, its preferences and what you get used to!!!
Having never owned a poptop I have never missed not having one. I also have never had a poptop leak, worried about it falling on my head or taken the time to install the poptop cover. I will admit living just north of San Diego I am rarely dodging bad weather and spend 90% (or more) of my time outside the cabin. I am right-handed and having the motor on the port side allows me to easily access the outboard with my right hand. If it was on the starboard side I would have to turn completely backward to access it with my right hand so, for me, it is more comfortable having it on the port side. Its just hard to miss what you've never had.
You mean I won't be viewed as the red-headed step child when we all get together for our annual reunion? Phew. I'll have to insist all visitors sit starboard, I don't want to be heeling with the sails down!
Funny ---Over 20 years of having the outboard on the port, and I never knew there was a wrong side. As for the pop top, I use it a few times a season, but if the top is up YOU AREN’T SAILING. Think about your priorities here, and enjoy
My motor is on the starboard side with controls in cockpit.(I like the controls) As to the pop top I thought it would be really handy. As yet I haven't used it up, even down here in Key West. BTW sailed it down from Cape Coral to Everglade City to Key West. Wonder trip so far. Just use what you have and have fun.
A sailor should never admit he blew it or made mistakes. There are two things that always make it seem better:
1) If it is something you did wrong maneuvering, falling off the dock, etc - You always look around to ensure no one saw it happen.
2) In your case regarding decision-making with a boat purchase - You always explain that it is as much a hobby enjoying working on improvement projects as it is for going sailing !
In the 5 years we owned Recess, we never raised the pop-top. But, we also never did any overnight trips on it either. Oh yes, I did sleep on Recess once, after getting back very late from an evening sail on a friend's boat!
Wait - boat mistakes? - 30+ boats and 50% mistakes - lets talk! Right now I have one that needs alittle work (dont they all?). I bought a Cat34 3 years ago, owned it for a year and acknowledged it was too much for me ($, storage, upkeep). Back to the Cat 25.
For what it's worth, when I obtained Limerick I had no idea of the options but since have found that I prefer not having a pop top, could care less if engine is port or starboard and have determined that condition is less because of age but more due to how the po maintained the boat. Oh, yes and finally I am continually impressed at how well thought out and therefore seaworthy our boats are. In short, there is no real better or worse, just different. Go out and enjoy!
