First of all, thanks to all the members' suggestions re solar panels. And now my next question: Is it possible to find a better (must also be safe), location for the battery? Is is difficult to reach and to do the wiring for the solar panels, etc ...

Look for the mod to the aft berth bulkhead. One of the best improvements to make it easier to get to the battery bay, and steering gear (if wheel steering).

Thank you for the great pictures. I will be doing this over the weekend. One other question. Will the battery deck on my 08' 250 hold two batteries? If not, what I can do for more room for 2 batts? Thanks again.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but gives you an idea to work from.

I worked through the hole. It was a tight fit as I'm pretty broad shouldered, but doable.

What year is your boat? Wing or WaterBallast? I'm curious because the battery bay changed quite a bit between years.

Our 2005 model had an excessively deep battery bay, so deep that I could not lift the battery up high enough to get it out over the bay wall.

I ended up cutting the bay front wall down with a sawsall and reglassing over the foam inside.

Dave & Paul: I asked about working through the hole because I had back surgery 10 years ago. I was hoping it might be a little easier if the wall was removed. My boat is a 2008 Wing Keel with wheel. Has anyone put a battery selector switch at the helm? If yes, where would be the best place or shouldnI use an isolator instead? Thanks again.

It'll definitely be easier and at least on my '97, it only takes a few minutes to remove the bulkhead. A drill motor with a screwdriver bit makes short work of it. Removing the two mattresses makes everything easier. I can't advise you on the battery switch as I've never done that mod, and we don't have a wheel, our is a tiller boat.

I installed our Battery selector in the starboard cockpit locker.
If you remove the entire trunk bulkhead, you might be able to reach in and over to the area outboard of the locker, but it does take a bit of dexterity. But it does mean that I don't have to go below to change the switch position.

FYI, I cut my aft bulkhead into 3 parts. Initially just two; Cut 1 was about 1/3 of the length from the Starboard side. But then I realized that in order to remove the port 2/3rds, I still had to remove the shelf edge panel on the port side.
By making a 2nd cut approx 1/3 from the port side (inboard of the port shelf panel) I can now remove the center section without having to remove the port side shelf edge.

Hope that makes sense!

Yes, that's what it is. I have one in a similar location.

[hijack]I'd be interested in Frog's comments on how his holding tank performs in that location so far away from the head. I calculated the dead volume in the hose at over a gallon, so it takes a lot of water to do a complete flush. And the tank seems to be significantly higher than the marine toilet, so unless your joker valve works perfectly, a lot of the flushwater that's in the hose flows back into the bowl after you flush.

Obviously I'm asking these questions because I have not been totally happy with how my head has performed with the holding tank in the stern.[/hijack]

I installed a marine head with holding tank several years ago after bought my boat, wife didn't like the porta potti, I didn't either. I haven't had any problems with it, though it is the same head I had in a previous boat so I'm familiar with it. There is a vented loop between the head and the tank, several feet of hose. I must admit that it's only been used twice in the past 6 years.
