It is time to renew my insurance. I currently have United Marine Underwriters. It may be time to shop for a better rate. Do any of you have experience with USAA for boats. I thought when I got my vehicle insurance from them they did not cover boats. Have not called them yet.

I got a great rate from Geico which uses Seaworthy for underwriting. I have them for my car insurance also which gave me a discount.

I've used Nationwide... because I bundle nobody can touch my rates (for me)...

I couldn't get Gieco, USAA, or progressive even close when I went to insure my boat. One little problem though.... my agent hadn't really ever insured a sailboat before. Quote of the day: "there is a question in here about racing... That seems odd.. Who would race a sailboat? I can't imagine that'd be a huge deal anyway given the speeds involved... but you don't race your sailboat do you?"

Oh boy, that took some explaining... Then some more explaining. Until I used the words "2 boats weighing 3500lbs moving at 10mph within inches without brakes," then she got it!

We have Progressive through USAA as well. No complaints at all. I've only had one claim, and it ended up not costing me a dime, and my rates/deductibles, etc. didn't go up.

Mine is bundled with Travelers home and auto. I'm fairly happy with it, but hard to tell since I've never had reason for a claim.

Check the terms carefully. My State Farm policy did not cover environmental damage and was limited to agreed value for salvage+loss. In other words, if the salvage costs equalled the value of your boat, you get nothing.

My BoatUS policy covers up to $854k for environmental damage, and up to agreed value for salvage cost, PLUS up to agreed value for loss. In other words, they'd pay up to 2x agreed value for the two.
