I would agree that for one design an asym would be inappropriate and at the very least against the intent of the Class. I'm not so sure about PHRF. I'm intending to test that someday at my Club.
well in PHRF, or other handicapped races, I could see anything, as long as it's stated, and someone applies the penalty rating for it.
I am all for upgrades in boat for the sake of speed, just doing so undeclared is just downright wrong. As for the OD rules, I was just trying to figure out if you took your symmetrical and tacked it to the bow, does that violate the OD rules... moreover, if you had a spinnaker cut to reach, and tacked it to the bow, does THAT violate the rules? I would think it would, but I want to make sure.
I'm NOT a sail maker. But my GUESS is that if you try to cut a sym spinnaker to be a good reaching sail tacked at the bow you would violate the max/min girth or foot dimensions. i'm having a new Genoa built for my furler now, I'll ask my sailmaker what the dimensions of a good asym will be for my boat and see what numbers he comes back with.

Some of the folks in our club that have J29's went with asyms and attached them to their spin poles to which they'd secured to the foredeck, extending over the bow. They took 6 seconds per mile penalties on their ratings for that modification. They have fractional rigs, so I think it worked ok for them but I always wondered how it would work with the Capri masthead rig.
