My wife got a couple of press passes to the NE Boat Show in Beantown this weekend. We're driving up tomorrow PM and planning to stop off at the Defender sale on the way up the I-95. Bottom paint is on my list.
Looks to be a good show with both power and sail on display. Looking for some electronics and who knows what else?
Any local icebound sailors with cabin fever around? Planning to do the show early Saturday, go for local seafood at Faneuil Hall for lunch, then take in the sights of Boston later on Sat. Supposed to be decent weather for Feb: 50s and sunny. I'll take it!

I'll be there. Doing Mongolian hotpot (Shabu Zen in Chinatown) for lunch then catching the show with my wife and some friends.

Ken-san,
Hope lunch was great. We saw a few really nice 37-40s Benetaus, Jenneaus, all what you'd expect. Catalina showed the 275 with the mid-cockpit trip hazard (traveler) and a 38. I saw two boats tho that I thought were stand outs - West White Potter was pretty cool. There's a guy in my harbor who has one but this was my 1st upclose view. Good trailer boat. And there were two Cape Cod boat builder sailboats. One was about 20' with sheer sails and a gaff rig. Old style details galore. All teak and brass (but with a fiberglass hull). I'll try to find my photo to post shortly.

Bruce -- that may have been the Goldeneye. Cape Cod Shipbuilders are best know for the Bullseye (15') and daysailors; now for producing the Daysailor (formerly O'Day Daysailor) and Rhodes 18. I have often thought that a good retirement boat for Long Island Sound would be the Bullseye -- small, full keel and simple!

But I covet their H 12-1/2 (~15' LOA), with a gaff, self-tending jib, lots of teak and bronze,... and I'll take some tanbark sails. There are several 12.5s in my area--I watch the local boards for them. (The new ones are somewhere N. of $35K.)

Yeah - Dave - you nailed it. She's a Herreshoff H-12 1/2 which is spectacular! See here. I fell in love with the hull shape, teak and brass and the gaff-rigged main. Another boat was being shown wearing a sail with the Day Sailor DS logo. Both beautiful hand-crafted boats.

Bruce: My late wife and I sailed our Daysailer II (then made by O'Day) for 21 years on L.I.S. I'd get another if it would get under the power lines between my dock and my sailing grounds--but it won't. A little gaffer should. And besides, the H 12.5 is so much prettier, how could I do otherwise in Mystic??

We really enjoyed the show, but it needed more sailboats.

I think the other Catalina was a 355, not a 38. My wife and I liked it the most out of what we looked at.

The other boat with the DS logo on the sail was a really sharp looking ketch with tanbark sails and a teak bowsprit. It was beautiful!

Looks like I'm to busy to make it to the show this year. In my opinion the 355 is too much boat, and the 275 is not enough. Sorry to see that the Cat. 315 is not on display. Last year I had to be virtually shooed away because the brokers were worried about the amount of drool I was leaving behind the shippy helm and perfectly proportioned cabin. I have dreams of one day getting rid of this land-based exercise. Hoping to inspire the admiral to set our sights beyond what is typical and sound but I would need to have her actually stand behind the helm of such vessel for this attempt at foolish inspiration to actually catch fire.

What is the big 'sail only' boat show for New England? I thought it was in in the water also.

I thought it was Providence but that is at an expo center and is sail and power.

A search for 'Newport Boat Show' found one in CA.

IMHO all the "local" shows tend to be light on sailboats. I think the strictly sail shows in Annapolis and Chicago appear to be the best bet for seing, dreaming and drooling. However if you can get their the Maine Boatbuilders show in Portland has some really neat boats -- sail and power, tons of wood and brass, and a very "yarr" clientel

Newport RI (near Quahog) has had a Sept show for as long as I can remember, and recently, a Spring show too. The fall show usually features 6 to 8 brands (Hunter, Benetau, Jenneau, Friendship, Seaward, Aileron, Sabre and of course, Catalina) in 3-4 sizes. It's as close to a Sail show as we get here in New England. And yes, the Annapolis show is majorly sail. NY, Providence, Hartford and Norwalk may show a Hobie or Optimist, but are largely powerboat shows. One thing I was disappointed about was there were few equipment and supply vendors at the show. So no "show specials" to speak of … Guess I'll have to wait for the Defender sale next month.

Newport RI is the one in this area--9/11-14. Most of the sailboats from that show move on to Annapolis for their big one, and the powerboats stop for the Norwalk show and then go to Annapolis. There are tons of vendor booths at Newport, and a very good representation of sailboats both in the water and on the hard.

Boston (the "New England" show) has disappointed me too many times. I kept thinking the vendors would come back after 2008, and the kept not doing it. There are way more mfgr's booths and reps at Defender's Warehouse Sale, 3/21-24, and everything they sell is discounted from their own great prices.

I miss the atlantic city sail show. I t always got me excited for the new season of sailing. Needed that sailing fix in Feb.

That is until they moved to the new convention center with the low roof where none of the boats could be rigged.

Buddy of mine went to the Atl City show to find a downeast type powerboat. He just sold a sweet early-70s Chris Craft with plenty of brightwork. I suggested he come with me to the NE show. I'm sure he'll find something before the start of the season. I suggested he get back into sailing and invited him for a spin on Passage in May.
