Hi All,

I live in Short Hills, NJ and have been sailing my 250 from Fire Island, NY for years. I'm not able to get over to Fire Island as much these days, so I'm considering relocating to a Marina in the Atlantic Highlands or Keyport area (or really anywhere convenient to Short Hills). If anyone can point me to a friendly marina in that area I'd be really grateful. Ideally I'd like a slip rather than a mooring.

Thanks!

Phil

Phil,
Your question has gone unanswered for a little while. I'm not in the area so can't speak from experience on local marinas, but here's how I'd start doing some homework. Get a cruising guide and charts (paper or online) of the area.
1. Geography - do you want to be way up inside the Navesink River or Shrewsbury River, or just inside Sandy Hook by Atlantic Highlands, or outside with access to the Atlantic Ocean through a breachway? Shark River, Belmar and Manasquan inlets are up in that area.
2. Adventure - being up inside a river a long way from open water is challenging due to currents and crowded conditions, and at times it takes a long time just to get out, but you're protected from weather mostly. Being near an inlet offers quick access to open water however the inlets can be dangerous at times in a big blow and opposing current. Standing waves and breaking square chop can be dicey.
3. People - what kind of people does the marina cater to? Big game anglers, families, elites, smaller boats, mega-yachts? Is it a marina or a boat club? Can you work on your own boat?, or yard crew only?
4. Go on Yelp and other local sites for stories from customers. Go on the marina websites themselves.
5. When you've narrowed down the areas and choices, visit the locations on a weekend day in warmer weather and talk to folks prepping their boats. Ask about everything. Look at the docks and see if the wood looks good or bad. Check the surroundings. You'll probably spend a lot of time there so it should be as nice as your deck and patio.
6. What's the neighborhood like outside the marina? Could you get carjacked?!?!
Good luck - just a few ideas ...

Due to the economy Its been a couple of years since I have had my boat in the water in that area. I was on the hard at the Atlantic Highlands for a year. They have a really nice ramp although a PAI not being slipped. Before that I was slipped at the Fairbanks Motel in Sea Bright for several years. Not much of a marina but was still nice. Took about 20 min to motor out to the bay. They got hit hard in Sandy and as of last year still weren't renting slips. There are a lot of marinas along that Rt 35 strip . They all got hit hard. The last 2 years I was in the Leonardo The state marina. very convenient nice marina, but as of last fall I was told they only have 2 feet of water at the entrance at low tide. Makes access only at mid to high tide. I'm looking at the Hudson in the Piermont area for the spring. maybe a mooring. Keeping my fingers crossed its been to long not sailing
