I have just towed an old C 25 1200 kilometers to my home. It is a genuine Catalina 25. I was told it was imported into Australia from USA. as the first demo boat to sell"off". The local boats built here in Australia are known as the Boomaroo 25. This boat has a Catalina Yachts American builders tag. The serial number on the tag is boat number 831. Can anybody tell me how old this hull is and perhaps anything else about it. I do not seem to be able to find a contact email address for the Catalina factory. I can understand that they are in the business of selling new boats and not looking up history. Any info would be great. Thanks Nick Viner.( worane)
It is a 1978. I figured that out by using the boat search functionality on this forum and looking up the serial numbers near yours: #828 - Loon, 1978 Standard,Fixed Keel Steve Roberts, Seattle WA USA #833 - Wicked, 1978 Standard,Swing Keel Joe Guidice, Farmingale NY USA
You can contact the Catalina office by using this contact form on their website. They will indeed answer you. I sent them a question about the rig on my 1981 Catalina last week and someone called me at home that same evening. They are very nice people and will indeed do everything they can to help you support your good old Catalina. http://www.catalinayachts.com/contactus.cfm
Welcome aboard. If you choose to join in the future, not required, the Mainsheet quarterly magazine of Catalina is now online and included in your dues. The free information through this extremely active and helpful forum weighed strongly for a Catalina when I was shopping for a 25. Catalina's responsiveness for a boat long out of production speaks well for the brand.
Thank you all for the warm welcome, so nice. Indeed Catalina Yachts got back to me with 1978. not bad to build 831 boats in one year as I believe that was the first year that the 25 was produced. Must be some set up !! Again thanks for the welcome. One week later I am sanding some cracks out of the glass just below the front of the fore hatch and above the deck. seems like a very thin bit of glass there. Not any more though. tomorrow will be sanding smooth and 24 hours later over coating with epoxy filler then the whole cabin combings will be coated in hi build epoxy and then two pack poly paint. I have all the windows out for anodising and have sent for new window rubbers a new swing keel lifting kit and also new catalina 25 side name plates. One question I have is , how come the whole top seems to have blue gel coat under the topcoat? It is over painted with white but was it really blue out of the factory? Seems like a LOT of blue. Regards Nick.
I have wondered about that too. Typically, the female mold was masked, primary color gelcoat sprayed, tape pulled, secondary color sprayed and then the glass layup was started. But why would the entire surface be sprayed instead of just the area near the previously masked portions? Even the deck is blue under white. It is possible that blue is also a binding agent between the white gelcoat and the glass layup or serves some other purpose. Gelcoat is usually an oxygen inhibited cure - maybe its a sealing layer. Curiouser and Curiouser. Maybe Catalina would tell us the next time someone talks to them. Of course we wouldn't be able to offer unsupported speculation, a particular winter treat, if we got a real answer.

(Pretty good run!) A few were built in '76, hundreds in '77 and each of many years after. You can use the <b>Boat Search</b> function at left to see the progression by hull#. (A few entries appear to be erroneous--the hull#s and years don't correspond.)
