If not, having polished back to shining ali.How would I finish them if not anodizing?
I do not want to powder coat.

My '78 aluminum window frames have the characteristic rough anodized look, and most importantly, are not turning powder. If your Al is powdery, you can paint after performing a conversion coat. Three steps to the chromate conversion, all water based, one caustic scrub, one acidic rinse, and one carcinogenic bath (or keep wet with frequent brusing). I wont go further on the process, but will give you a hint to destroy the excess chromic acid, as after collecting all freshwater rinses, you tend to collect a bucketful of hazmat. Chromic acid is just a convenient name for hexavalent chromium, so baking soda does nothing. What you do is acidify the orange solution with sulfuric acid. A few splashes of a particular drain cleaner works. Next, in an open field, ready to walk away from the reaction, introduce a metabisulfite salt (Bonide stump-out). Suffocating gases of volcanic odor will evolve from the bucket and the carcinogenic orange hexavalent chromium solution will be reduced to a solution containing green inert trivalent chromium (the safe stuff). Now add the baking soda, let evaporate, then do what you want with the green crystals. Dump orange hexavalent chromium only if you want your last date to be with Erin Brockovich.

OR take the frames to someone setup to do the work and properly dispose of the hazmat.

Nick, to answer your original question, yes, the C25 aluminum window frames were anodized when the boats left the Catalina factory.

FWIW, I had mine re-anodized. I didn't do any prep work (other than remove an insane amount of silicone).

Thank you all for sharing so much knowledge with me.
Have followed your leads and have now refinished with metallic titanium auto paint . two coats and all the relevant primers and then three coats of clear.
They look smashing.
Today I have finished putting in the new window rubbers and have finished the two pack repaint of the cabin combings.
A couple of days to cure the new paint and by then I will have to have come up with a decision on whether to reseal the windows with 3 M 4000 or to use butyl mastic. Any thoughts? Anyone got any ideas. It worries me that 3M call their window sealer (4000) an adhesive. What if they still leak and I have to remove them again?
