I am the new owner of a 2003 C250 WK. We took our first sail two days ago. The boat handled great. My only issue was with the rope clutch for the mainsail halyard. It would not hold the halyard tight. I am wondering if I have an issue with needing to replace the clutches inside, or if my halyard is too small for size of the clutch. Anyone know what size line the original halyard would have been?

I just found the answer to my question in the original owners manual. The halyard size is 5/16".

If you replace your halyard make sure you use a low stretch line. My clutch slipped from the very beginning (2005). When I replaced the line with the low stretch variant the problem completely went away.

Thanks for the comment. I reversed the halyard to try how that works. I know sometimes the halyard can wear a bit being stopped at the same place for a long period.

Our Rope clutches effectively have a pump action.

Close the clutch most of the way down, raise it and lower again.

The 2nd time down holds the line much better.

I just learned that line clutches can be rebuilt. Annapolis Performance Sailing (APS) either has, or can order the parts. They made a video that shows how to rebuild one. This link will take you to the video. The prices for the parts don't look too bad, compared to the cost of buying a new one.

I decided to go with a new Dyneema 3/8" halyard. I tried reversing the halyard, and pumping the clutch, with no success. It still slipped with the 5/16" halyard size. It is probably more than likely the line stretching when under load because the current halyard does not appear to be low stretch. I don't think I will have any more problems with the 3/8".
