Moving North with my boat. Looking for information on best places to Moor or slip my Catalina 25 (SK) in LBI area. I just bought a house in southampton about 45 min west of the shore off rt 72. I thought the Barnegat area or Little Egg Harbor area look nice.
Im also looking for what the reasonable rate is. Since I have a swing keel I can take a shallower slip.

John - I keep my boat in Lanoka Harbor at Laurel Harbor Yacht Club (its a no-frills marina, not really a "yacht club.") On the upside, it is very well protected and CHEAP. On the downside, you need to motor for about 1.5 miles before you reach a point in the bay where you have enough water to lower the keel and hoist the sails. My boat was in the water during Hurricane Sandy and even though the storm surge was such that I could only see the tops of the pilings, she was right in her slip. No damage whatsoever.

I pay about $1850 per year for slip fees and storage. This includes hauling and washing the bottom in the fall and launching in the spring (or in my case this year, the summer - as in yesterday!) If you have a place to keep the boat at home and a method of moving it, slip fees would be in the neighborhood of $1100 - $1200. I'm familiar with Southampton - I used to live in Medford, but now live closer to Philly in Collingswood. Commuting to the Laurel Harbor Marina is a piece of cake from Southampton.

Barnegat Bay is a great place to sail a swing keel. The motor boat traffic can be a little much on the weekends, but most people are courteous. Like everywhere, there are a handful of jerks with more money and motor than brains who like to impress the sailors with their ability to make wakes. I have not sailed in the ocean as the Barnegat Inlet has a reputation for being difficult to navigate. I would imagine once you got outside, sailing south along LBI would be glorious.

I'm happy to talk to you more about this. Email me: pat at duffyconsultinggroup dot com.
