With the low cost of personal locater beacons and epribs there is no reason to go offshore without one........

I guess his first distress call wasn't that distressful....

I guess he got caught in some weather, was blown off course, had a knockdown, went overboard and lost his antenna. He apparently climbed back aboard and eventually used some wire and a coat hanger and was able to get a weak signal out. The CG was on top of the mayday and a USN destroyer diverted to pick him up. The first I heard was that he disappeared in the middle of the Pacific. True to a point - a long sail between islands in Hawaii is technically in the middle of the Pacific. "lost in the middle of the Pacific" gets more viewers and readers than "lost near Hawaii" You can certainly die either way though.

On the TV news last night, they showed the boat alongside and it appeared intact (Mast Up, Spreaders and shrouds looked ok, sail on boom)

Summits up!

And for a boat reported to be taking on water, it's floating pretty high above the line!

I just watched that video. Looks like the easiest rescue I've ever seen...... Almost looked like they were having cocktails in the cockpit......

I guess most rescues are easy in calm seas after the storm. In the 12 days he was at sea, he must have been able to resolve or minimize the 'taking on water' issue and get the pump(s) working. She does seem to be sitting well in the water. Seems also that there was a lot of misinformation posted. One report said he lost both masts - looks like she is a sloop rig so only one mast. Hopefully soon we'll be able to read his account of the events.
