I've seen a few boats out there with companion way hatchs made from plexiglass rather than wood. does anyone know of a company that does this or does someone have dimentions and specs? Thanks
I owned a '74 San Juan 21' and I relaced the companionway door with tinted or smoked plexiglass. I went to an automotive glass dealer called Safe Lite and had them do the work. The hard part was there had to be a spacer/grab bar mounted at the top for the lock and latch assembly to be mounted to. They had this made at some company specializing in custom composite materials. They took the measurements, cut the plexiglass and mounted the spacer/grab bar with all the hareware attached. They even furnished me with a spare because it was left over from the whole sheet they had to purchase. Mine was one piece designed to slide down into a irregular sized slot. Total cost about $150.00. At the same time I had them replace the four window ports with matching plexiglass for another $100.00. The overall appearance jumped ten years forward.
A nice variation is a gray lexan replacement for the top board only--providing light, maintaining privacy, and keeping some of that teak look. Look in your yellow pages for plastics fabricators--if you can't find one, there's one here in Norwalk, CT that does work for boats. They can use the existing hatch board as a pattern. Some that I've seen have a few rows of holes drilled at an angle for ventilation.

I replaced my boards with a oak door with full sized smoked lexan windows. I like being able to open and close the door and the lexan lets alot of light into the cabin. The frame of the doors can be easily be removed and the boards replaced if needed.

My center hatchboard has a smoked plexiglass insert, screwed/bedded into the 1 1/2" teak frame around it. Looks good, although I only use this or the top hatchboard while locking up and leaving the boat.
I made new doors for Nin Bimash II using red oak and smoked lexan. I'll try to include a picture. I used the old hatch boards as a pattern and built the doors with a piano hinge down the center from top to bottom. The joints are morticed and pegged glued with polyurathane. The lexan is set in routed notches When removed the doors fold in half and stow against the dinette seat back in the galley held in place by a bungee. It works very well and looks great. I just about choked when I saw what I would have to pay for teak. Since I was making paneled bifold doors for the saloon and head, new dinette and galley countertop I decided to go with oak everywhere. I took a sample of the oak and a piece of finished teak to my Sherwin Williams store and they made a stain that let the oak when finished look like or close to the finished teak.

as you can see at the bottom of the hatch we had some fit problems but will fix them with a newer version of the hatch. the stowage is really easy and handy to re-set
