Yesterday a sailor friend was visiting my 1981 Swing keeler and examining the Winch, which is somewhat tough for me to crank. Sez he: I dont see why you couldnt work up an electric motor to drive this thing, with a little ingenuity. I have never seen this discussed on the site, and wonder whether anyone has tried making keel raising and lowering a pushbutton affair? Fair winds, ron srsk Orion SW FL
I've seen electric keel winches discussed on the Mac/Venture forums long ago... but have never seen anyone implement it.
You'd need to have dependable limit switches/load clutches to prevent pulling the cable too far in, or letting too much out. You'd also need to implement a design with manual backup capabilities.
Nothing insurmountable to engineer, but I guess nobody had quite enough need or desire to build one. (at least that I've seen so far)

Sounds like a project. So, when you give up on it.....just order a new winch from catalina Direct. I got a new one, and I can't believe what a huge difference. It was definitely THE best purchase I've made for my boat yet.
Thanks for the thoughtful replies. I think my next step is to get a guy to cut, weld, and insert a 2--3" piece to the angled part of my winch handle, thereby giving me a greater mechanical advantage whilst still clearing the steps. Next I will see if I can scratch up some units to replace the winch. Ultimately I see a wing at the end of the tunnel,or is that my wife driving a locomotive? Fair winds, ron #2343 1981 Orion SW FL
Oh, on the new keel winch....I guarantee it will be so much easier to crank up or down!!!! The one problem I had, was that the adaper (round stud with the slot where the handle attaches) on the new winch sticks out an inch and a half or two inches from the steps. My original was flush. I couldn't find much way of shortening the adapter, so we cut a hole in a tennis ball and stuck it on the adapter when it's not being used. Works fine, saves the crew from cuts and scrapes, and not too juryrigged looking.
