Hello Doug,

I hope you don't mind my addressing you so publicly. I am in the middle stages of doing a bottom job and have followed your post on "Prepping the hull for barrier coat/paint"

I feel that that is the way I am going to go. I think you said you put on 2 coats? How much of the Bio Guard 251 did you need? In some places on the keel I've sanded through to the metal. Did you have this happen? and did you put anything other than the paint on it?

That's all I've got for now, I'm sure something else will come up as a work through this. Thanks in advance and also for your post and pics on this. I'm land locked with no marinas around to see how things are done so I rely on info from guys like you who have already done it. Thanks

I used an 8 hole Makita industrial sander with various grits of paper. I started with rough and worked up to a finner grade. Cant remember off hand Ill have a look when I get home. The orbital sander was attached to a Sears 8 Hp shop vack with fitration filter and double bag to catch all the dust. The vacume hose is jury rigged to the port for the dust collector on the sander. Sand Paper started with I think 70 or 80 grit to remove anti foul paint. I removed all of the ablative paint then used a less course paper to rough up the bottom.Be sure to wipe off all dust and dirt with MEK or Laquer thinner.The keel was fiberglass encased but the epoxy will go on over steel or fiberglass either way. After the bottom was ready I applied a two part barrier coat.Second coat to cover any pin holes. http://www.epoxyproducts.com/barrier4u.html also see the vendors site.
This stuff comes in a kit about 1 1/2 gallons worth. Cost was about $225 and worth every penny. It goes on with a roller made for aplying epoxy. It goes on about 12 to 14 mills thick. Nice huh. Read all the instructions and follow mix and dry times. http://www.epoxyproducts.com/marine.html I will ansure any questions you want on the rework I did. After the epoxy dried I used ablative bottom paint over it.
