So it's officially here. First red maple leaves, cooler, crisper nights and 10-12 knots of wind all day.
Last week a friend and I went out of New London CT in 12-16 knot westerlies aboard his 21ft Wharram Tiki catamaran. We were clocking 8-10 kts on a beam reach and broad reach, surfing down the waves. No submarines but there was a navy ship and the tall ship Columbia in port. A pod of dolphins was spotted in the Race.
Sunday I crewed on a friend's 30 monohull and we were cranking 6+ kts on a 20° heel in northwesterlies with puffs.
Yesterday I encountered 80° sunny weather with consistent 12kt southwesterlies pushing Passage along at 5+ kts on a 15° heel.
This is the season we wait for all year!

All summer long, if you want wind, come east, young man!

Yep Dave is right. Zero wind here, Flat, Not a ripple.
We did have an unusually light day (8-10) here. My reference is to the height of summer, when western Long Island Sound is too frequently complete doldrums ("Hey--I see some ruffling way over there..."), while east of the CT River, including around New London, we have nice 10-15 ocean breezes just about every day (except when they're occasionally 15-20). People from all over CT keep boats over here for that reason.

My buddy keeps his Tiki catamaran in the Niantic River. It's actually an estuary, not really a river, that opens out to the Niantic Bay which is a part of the eastern Long Island Sound. From there, you've got the entire Connecticut River, 60 miles of unbroken navigable River with coves, bays and creeks all along the way, the North Fork of Long Island with its multiple picturesque harbors, New London harbor and the Thames River that includes 10 miles of coves and harbors and ends in the neat little town of Norwich, Fishers Island Sound with Noank and Mystic Harbors, Stonington town and harbor, and Westerlly RI's Watch Hill (summer home of Taylor Swift) and the Race - the gateway to the Atlantic Ocean - Block Island, Bermuda and Portugal. Milford Harbor (N041º10' x W073º) is halfway between Hells Gate and the Race. So far, we're getting a lot of nice fall winds. I'll take whatever I can get!

Hey New Englanders and Long Islanders. Looks like breezy conditions may be with us sooner rather than later. The 5:00PM NOAA models now show Hurricane Jose on a more westerly course in the coming week. Originally the models indicated the storm would head northeast between New England and Bermuda, but now the tracks show the storm heading a little closer to Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island on Tuesday night. Because Atlantic Ocean water temperatures are below 80ºF north of a line parallel to NC, Jose should become a tropical storm by the time it makes any landfall, but you never know.

Breezy ??? Weather channel says strong Gusty winds out of the east for the sound. Just look at those isobars. What that will probably mean is rough waves, Water being pushed up the sound and wind speed past sailing comfort as in small craft warnings. I'll be more confortable when it's gone. PS, Don't look now but there's 2 more that came off of Africa.

Damned Africa--keeps brewing trouble and sending it to us like a parade of crudely targeted ICBMs!
The marine forecast I see (eastern LIS) is for light SE - E winds all weekend, picking up Monday night with possible tropical storm conditions following. Flooding is likely along western LIS as the leading edge of Jose pushes more water in than can squirt out through Hell Gate.

Last weekend had great sails with that "eastern LIS wind" that migrated west -- 8-14, but blustery. Hope this weekend is decent -- and hope Jose heads farther East than anticipated.
