"For those using a bowline, work the knot so the tail and the loop are as small as possible to keep it from snagging on something."

Also make sure that you tie a right-handed bowline - then the tail lies parallel to the knot rather than at right angles as with a left-handed knot. This reduces the chances of hang-ups on the shrouds/lifelines.
(My crew won't let me tie the sheets on the genoa - I'm left-handed...<img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>)
