Requesting Charter Advice (Hawaii)

As some of you may or may not know, I will unfortunately be in Hawaii the weekend of Nationals. Now before all you guys say "What a lucky SOB" keep in mind my wife and I are going for my sister-in-laws wedding. (That should read "Going into Debt!!) So the Hawaii trip isn't all a bundle of Fun.

Since the "Broads" as my father-in-law sarcastically puts it, will be out gallavanting getting "Wedding stuff" together on Fathers Day, I thought I would attempt to take him for a daysail. It will get us the heck out of the way, as well as allow us to do something enjoyable.

We will be in Maui on Fathers Day. I have been unable to find a bare boat charter company via the web with the exception of ones that rent Hobie Cats and the like. I would like a 28 to 30 footer that we can take out, sail around for half a day and bring back home.

Any advice or assistance is appreciated.

Just read someplace where somebody sailed a 3000 lb 25 footer to Hawaii. You could turn it into a real adventure.

Over the years, quite a few Moore 24's have made the crossing in the various West Coast to Hawaii races.

While it's not really prudent to do so, I'd guess that a few Catalina 25's and Cal 25's have made the passage too. Probably lots of 27's have done it.

From what I've read, Hawaii can be of a challenging venue for sailing. Often a little too much wind, rough seas and strong currents in the passages and on the windward side of the islands, unfriendly shores with few harbors.

There may not be a lot of bareboat charters available aside from daysailers.

Keep us posted on what you find...

Call some yacht brokerages in Hawaii and tell them you are interested in purchasing a Catalina 42, but first you would like to take a demo out for a spin. Maybe you can wrangle a free ride out of them. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Stay away from the PMRF off the coast of Kauai also, because it would ruin your sail if you were mistaken for a hostile target.

I just got back from spending a week in Maui in Feb. (okay, it felt like I just got back). Before going, I hunted for bareboat charter anywhere on the island without avail. If you find it, let me know, we go back again next year. (my wife's company meeting) In the mean time, I highly recommend the sailing cat Alli Nui sailing out of Ma'allea. She is a 60 ft catamaran doing whale watching, snorkeling, and sunset cruises. They don't go where other boats go (Molakini). They also limit there passengers to 36. Most of the other boats that size are well over 75. For the snorkeling, they supply all gear including wetsuit top and towel. They also feed you well. My only frustration was not being able to get out and pull a sheet or two.
