Each Year Hill Country Yacht Club at Canyon Lake Texas offers a series of Sailing Classes to Novice, Begining and Racing sailors. Last Weekend was The Begining Sailing Class instructed by Derek Crawford. I voluntered to participate by allowing one of the begining sailors (who had never sailed before and had just purchased a 26'S2) to sail my C250. There were three begining sailors in the class and after the classroom sesseion we had a nice lunch and then depated for an afternoon sail. Derek took two females on his C25, and another experienced sailor took a couple on his C22, I took Joe on my C250. The C22 left the marina first, I followed and Derek was at least 15 minutes behind. As we sailed close hauled up the lake with our begining sailors at the helm I noticed that Derek was closing fast. The winds were 12-15, I had reefed my main to the first reefing point to insure a pleasent experience for my guest. We were averaging 4 knots+. Derek closed after about 35 minutes on the water and to my surprise he passed with some incredible headway....check the pic:

Was this begining Sailing or begining motor sailing??

Honest guys - the motor was NOT running!! I left it down to slow us a bit and make Steve feel better...<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> I also had a 12-year old girl on the helm....
