I got a $10 coupon from Boat US, so I went down there to see if there was something I could buy (ended up with a video tape instruction on how to use my GArmin 76). I was going to buy some teak oil, but I read the instructions saying I should use a teak cleaner first to remove dirt and age. There's no dirt on the teak, but it is faded from sun. Do I need to clean the teak first, or just put the teak oil on.

clean it first
you would be suprised how dirty it gets
i clean mine with tire cleaner.
then i go to the drug store and pick upsome oxalic acid
bang! good as new.

i use the teak oil sealer by star brite
i get at west marine in a pint size.

works the best i have seen and i have been refinishing teak since 1973... it comes in two colors and i use the natural lite
the classic is more of a darker color

you will not be disappointed in the results

Before I bought my 250 I restored two older ( one 1974 & one 1982) sailboats and found that nothing worked better for me than the TEKA 2 step system. You put the first solution (very basic) on for a couple of minutes and then rinse with the second solution (very acidic) and the hose. I used a soft scrubrush and got teak that looked brand new every time. Wear rubber gloves and sneaks, and keep running the water and its safe.
The next day I fimished it so that I would not have to mess with it ever again. I put ARMADA (available at any boat store)polyurethane on it. I used cetol on the first boat but it comes up a little too orange for my taste and the Armada looked more natural. 3 coats, then a coat at the end of the season and a coat at the beginning of the next. Beautiful teak... without a whole lot of maintenance.
