The family went down to the boat last night for our first sleep aboard. We got up early and motored out to sea in flat calm. We saw a whale just outside the harbor. Other than a fisherman or two, we were the only boat on the water. We had an unusual south-west wind that started slowly and built throughout the morning. By 10 AM we were close reaching at 6 knots in 2 to 3 foot seas headed directly for Avalon.

We practiced tacking and ran the boat on all points of sail, and then headed in early. The first tack was perfect. The second time we got hung in irons. After a few more times we were doing OK. Not winning any races but not coming to a halt, either. Everything worked perfectly and we had a ball. I want to go again, tomorrow! Too bad the mother of all storms is forecast. <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hopefully the storm will blow through and we'll be able to go to Catalina for Spring Break (April 17 through 20)<b></b>

It looks and sounds like you had a great day on the water. The pooches appear to be enjoying the ride, too!

Avalon is the main city on Catalina Island, 35 miles due west of Dana Point, at what is called the "East End" of the island. As I understand it, it is unusual to be able to sail TO the island, the usual pattern is motor over in the early morning in light headwinds and sail back in the afternoon with tail winds.

We don't really like to go to Avalon, it is touristy and a cruise ship stop (plus dogs are not allowed). We prefer the primitive coves and anchorages and the fun places around the west end. I was just commenting on the unusual South winds.

We are busy planning our first cruise - we have a dinghy, outboard, 2 man kayak, fishing stuff, all the toys, food, water, a family of 4, 2 dogs - and we're only sitting 2 or 3 inches below the bootstripe! The weather looks promising for later this week (front is supossed to pass Monday).
