I got my new Lewmar Double rope clutch from Defender yesterday. I went to the boat today to install it. My old spinlock clutches weren't strong enough to hold my main halyard securely. Before I started I fed the halyard through and tugged on it just to make sure it was the right size. No slippage. Then I filled the excess hole from the old clutch, and drilled new holes for the new clutch. I mounted the new clutch and sealed the new holes with 3M 301. I ran the halyard through and gave it a try.

The halyard slips right through.<img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle> I think I just installed a size too big. I know...I should've verified the size of the halyard before I even bought this clutch (3/8-7-16), but I thought my halyard was 3/8 vice the actual 5/16 according the my owners manual. I called Defender, and they can get me the next size down (5/16-3/8), but they aren't sure it they'll refund the money from the first one.

So...anybody interested in a brand new double rope clutch?

I'm a dumbass too. When I thought I had the wrong sized clutch I discovered that I installed them backwards. Works great now.

Well, after all of that work.....Take the easy way, and just buy new heavier halyard line.

do we really want to get into dumbass stories?

When I installed the roller furler I needed to cut the luff, the plastic extrsion that the sail luff feeds into. I extended my tape measure 25 feet, made a mark, and measured out the rest of the required distance. Checked it to make sure I got it right. I laid the luff on the saw horses, checked everything again amd picked up the saw.

For a guy who is great at destruction, and Tim Allen in putting back together, everything was going great. I really had this knocked. I found my mark, lined up the saw, and turned it on, cut right through the luff, only to discover that I had cut at the 25 foot mark, not the right one.

Talk about dumbass! <img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle>

next time I also checked the mark before cutting!

I don't think I can use a heavier halyard. I think a 3/8 line would chaffe in the mast.
