C250 places Second in Fiesta Regatta after

The Fiesta Regatta (3 races Saturday and 2 races Sunday) held At Canyon Lake Tx had 3 boats in the NonSpin Fleet Where Derek Crawford place first in his C25 This Side up, Here is a pic of Derek (on the left) accepting the 1st place recognition form the HCYC commodore of sail Jim Clower:

Here is Me and crew accepting recognition for second place in the cruiser Fleet:<img src="http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b3da06b3127cce975c3c63bcc90000001610" border=0> I am on the right, the Admiral is to my right (the only female to participate as crew in the whole regatta), and the guy left of her is Bob, the best sail trimmer in central Texas, and the guy on the far left is Jim Clower the vice commodore for sail.
In the first race just as we were about to cross the finish line a Beneteau 31'<img src="http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b3da06b3127cce975c685a3dea0000001610" border=0>tacked near the pin on port tack torward us (on starboard) I yelled out "Starboard". the Skipper did not respond nor did he change course, when I realized there was an immenint collision I fell off hard but it was to late and we collided. His Anchor which was on his anchor roller ]<img src="http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b3da06b3127cce975d3d51dc2f0000001610" border=0>
Smacked into the Port side bow and as I fell off we broadsided.
I yelled "Protest" to the committe Boat and they acknowledged, the Beneteau took his 720 degree penalty turns and crossed the finish line in time to place third. Here is the Damage to Moon Chaser:

Just 2 dings, one that removed a bit of Gel Coat and one that took a nick out of the Rub Rail including a small inditation.
Moon Chaser placed 2-1-2-3-3 to take 2nd place trophy out of 6 boats in the fleet. the other boats included a 27' C&C, 1st place, 31' Bene teau 3rd place Catalina 25 4th place, Hunter 25.5 5th place and a Starwind 22 6th Place. As I am entering my second year of racing I must share my new found experience...:
1. If You sense that a collision my happen in a race and you are not the offending sailer, yell Starboard or whatever the appropriate response is at the time then take immediate evasive action. Immedialtly display the protest flag (red) then converse with the commitee after the race. A collision is very unsetteling to the whole event and it's participants. I saw the potential collsion in advance, I expected the other skipper to take evasive action.I could have just as easily yelled Starboard, tacked and then protested. I am learning and I just learned the 1st rule the hard way. BUT....Frank made a very sturdy boat..we went head to head with a 2000 Beneteau 31' and just have a small battle scar to show (the beer took care of the rest). You do not want to have to put your boat through this experience just to find out how well it is constucted but now I know!, We collided at a near 45 degree angle...maybe even wider initially?.......Catalina's Rule. Just a side note..todays winds were 8-18 mph..the first race we refeed, the winds died to around 8-10 for the second and we put it all out..then the winds picked up again..we managed and placed third...But Derek..his boat just flat out hauls!..watching "This Side Up" was a pleasure...very hard to describe,

Steve, is "starboard" the only thing you yelled at the Beneteau boat?

I am glad to see the collision damage is small, just a chip out of the gelcoat. Professional fiberglass repair is hideously expensive. A C-22 in our club hit a concrete dock at about the level of the bow padeye, punching out the padeye and damaging about a 3 square foot area of hull around the padeye. Repair was $3700, almost as much as the whole boat was worth!

Steve - When you beat Derek last year, I knew that was no fluke. When a new racer starts winning from the get-go, that's a sign that he has good racing instincts. You need to clear some shelf space for the trophies you're going to win.

I'm sure glad that he's in the Cruiser Fleet and not in Non-Spin.

By the way - both days hit 90 degrees...my genoa trimmer flew down from Washington, D.C. to race with me - and he got plumb wore out!

It wouldn't help to have Brad - he doesn't have any local knowledge!!
Actually the Washington crew member has raced with me the last 3 years - but his wife was appointed as a White House Nurse (yeah - the one on Pennsylvania Ave) so JD had to get a job in yankee land - but he still wants to race with us because he has so much fun - so he flies in for our Regattas! Best darn genoa trimmer a skipper could have!

P.S. "This Side Up" won't be coming to the Nationals - it's just too darn far. But I'm looking for a crew/skipper spot...has to be a TR tho'.

One of the Committee members just sent these pics of the incident, the 1st photo shows the impending Crash..The Beneteau had tacked into us, I had yelled "STARBOARD" and I had my helm over at this point to avoid a collision (all happened in less than 5 secsonds). The second photo is just after the collision, check the Sails as the wind was knocked out of the Genoa's,

The collision sounded like someone had thumped a bass drum - and I was a good 1/4 mile away...<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

Dave - that might be an idea. My crew were disappointed that we had to pass on the Regatta. They would both fly in tho'! My headsails have luff tape...<img src=icon_smile_8ball.gif border=0 align=middle>

In regards to close quarter racing(ie. trading paint), wasn't it Dale Earnhardt who said,

That's true for NASCAR. They have big budgets that allow for major repairs. We're just weekend warriors, and can't afford to rub. Also, in our sport the penalties are so severe that it's hard to win if you violate the rules. Yacht racing collisions are rare, but when they happen, it's usually because the burdened yacht was inattentive and didn't see the other boat coming, or, because a racer got overly aggressive. The smart thing to do is avoid collisions like the plague.

Huhhh?...Steve, I posted that Rubbing is racin' comment with "tongue firmly in cheek" and did not mean to imply that banging boats in yacht racing was part of the sport(as in Nascar). I was trying to draw a humerous paralell between racing a 7kt sailboat and a 200mph stock car.

It was a joke, as in...funny HaHa! <img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle>

Don - I knew that you intended that your comment "...was a joke, as in...funny HaHa!" But, your comment was ambiguous. People read all sorts of unintended meanings into our comments here. Some newbies, who don't know any better, could very easily have read your comment and assumed that it was not a joke, but rather an accurate description of what yacht racing is really all about. I try to dispel harmful misconceptions about sailing and racing that might deter some people from enjoying every aspect of our sport.
