i'm looking for a plain depth finder. any good recommendations, i do not need all the bells and whistles. what's better, through hull or transom mount. do the throughh hull transducers require making a hole in the hull? can it be done with Gypsy still in the water? are they less acurate than the transome mount ones?
I have been very pleased with the Hummingbird 100 I installed a couple years ago. I got it on sale for less than $100. It not only shows depth, but gives a profile of the bottom on a scolling LCD. I installed the transducer in the vee berth using a puddle of epoxy to hold it. It shoots through the hull very well. Just remember, the floor of the hull in that location is about a foot below the water line. Therefore, the depth will be a little conservative.
