What does this outboard part do?

Hi everyone,

My Mercury 7.5hp outboard (two-stroke) overheated in March. I took it off the transom, brought it home & took it apart ... 'turns out the impeller was in a dozen pieces.

Since I had just paid major bucks to have the engine tuned and the water pump replaced last November, I took it back to the shop that worked on it. Even though they claim to have a 12 month warranty on parts and labor, they won't honor the warranty. I've been fighting with them over this for six weeks, but they won't budge. Today one of their managers claimed that impellers aren't covered under a warranty anyway, even on new engines. I finally gave up ... they gave me a 30% discount on replacement parts, and I brought my outboard home to do the work myself.

Here is my first question ... what is the function of this melted part? The water tube that carries water to the engine head goes through it, and it sits on top of the water pump. It looks like it used to be a funnel ... ?

Since the jerks at Sail & Ski didn't sell me a replacement part for it, I suppose they didn't think it was necessary to replace it. I don't care what it looks like, as long as the engine works OK. BTW, in the photo, the left end of the tube attaches to the top of the water pump, and the right end of the tube goes to the engine head.

What do y'all think? Thanks for the help!

I just took a closer look at the parts they sold me ... I might have answered my own question. Here is another photo ... I think the white gizmo on top of the water pump housing (in the foreground of the photo) is what the melted black blob USED TO BE:

Buzz: I truly don't mean to increase your anger, but I suspect you might want to get a copy of the service manual that tells you what it is.

Now, my SWAG: I'd guess that it's a damper that positions the tube in the lower unit while reducing a harmonic vibration that could shake it loose from the head. That information and a dime will get you... uhhhh... hmmmmm....

Looks to me like a former marine life form that was in the wrong place at the wrong time when you overheated <img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle>
As far as the jerks are concerned, you can drag them into small claims court without hiring a lawyer.....just like on TV, won't cost you too much, and its worth seeing them suffer the aggravation. You might even win. First read the small print in the warranty.

They probably don't carry warranty's on impellers because impellers can easily burn up in about 30 seconds if ran without cooling water flowing through the water pump.
