This is second inquiry at to extended trip the end of May from Racine, Wis to Sandusky, Oh. on Lake Erie. Any input as to the best and shortest day route to cross Lake Mich. from Racine to Western shore of Mich. and approx time depending on prevailing winds etc. There dont seem to be many convenient marinas on the Wis. side of lake. Thanks in advance.

Racine to Port Washington, WI. (nice municipal marina, good free anchorage, nice town, do your shopping here).

Port Washington to Sheboygan (25 nmiles) (expensive resort marina but a friendly place, not easy to get to any town or shopping, pool, lounge).

Sheboygan to Pentwater Michigan. 60 nautical mile crossing. Wait for good weather. With prevailing winds, should be downwind. When we did it it was pretty bumpy mid lake. There were other boats on the course and we had them on the VHF most of the way. I guess for a Cat 25 plan on 10 hours.

If you don't fancy this, the other option is to head south around the bottom end of the lake. Racine - Waukegan - Chicago - Grand Haven - Pentwater. If you do so you can avoid the crossing altogether.

Or head north up to Door County and cross at "Death's Door". But you are right the Wisconsin side has few marinas, no anchorages.

Once to Pentwater I gave a suggested course in the previous thread.

Don't know about Lake Michigan, but be sure to read your charts well from the Detroit River to Sandusky. There are numerous shoals around the islands and low water throughout that area of Lake Erie. Also be sure to stay out of the firing range.

The Sandusky bay is also very low so stay in the channel.
