My spouse is finally re-employed (at a substantial paycut) but due to her extended stay at home we put a bottom job off this past winter. We are in a frsh water lake and the current paint is 4+ years old.

I thought about borrowing or renting a float lift from some other sailboat person on our lake, lifting the boat out and pressure washing the bottom. I could then slap on a coat of bottom paint knowing I will miss the bottom of the keel and some of the bottom because of the boards.

Not perfect, but cheap and would get me through the summer.

What do ya'll think?

Hi Frank,

It sounds to me like you are going to pull the boat at the end of the summer, and then do a proper bottom job ... is that right?

If that's so, my gut reaction is just pressure wash it and go with whatever that gives you ... especially if you're not a racer. If you don't take the time to sand it and properly prepare the bottom, you're just going to cover all the crud that didn't wash off with expensive paint. Then you'll have to do it all over again, including buying more expensive paint.

Others might disagree, but it seems like a temporary solution to a long range problem ... kinda' like wetting the bed ... sooner or later you're going to have to get up and do something about it! <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Frank,

If you are looking to just get through the summer, I think I would skip the time and expense of an interim partial paint job and just try scrubbing/cleaning the bottom as best you can while its in the water, and then do a complete bottom job in the fall. If it has been 4+ years since the last bottom job, a few more months can't hurt too much.
