I've read emails with comments about the CDI & Hood furling systems. Just wondering if anyone can comment on or has experience with the ProFurl furling system. How does it compare to CDI, Hood, Harken, etc.?? Good quality/bad quality ?? Any unique problems with ProFurl that other systems don't have ?? Thanks.
Catalina shifted a couple of years ago from the CDI to a Shaefer furler (not sure if its the Pro-furler) on the C250s. There have been some negative comments on the c250 forum. Conversely, CDI's rarely elicit negative comments.
Most of the negative seems to revolve around fouling of the halyard around the stay. The Shaefer furler requires an eye strap (fouling preventer) on the mast down from the mast truck to route the jib halyard to the furler whereas the CDI does not use the jib halyard having an integral halyard.
Another consideration... if the use of a drifter / reacher is contemplated... IMHO the CDI makes better sense as 1. the jib halyard is free and 2. the preventer required of the Shaefer unit might interfere with a full cut luff on the drifter / reacher.
I confess no experience with the Shaefer unit so if I'm wrong about the use of a drifter / reacher being a problem with these units... I'd be glad to be set straight.
Hi, I have a ProFurl 25ri on my 25 tall rig. It replaced a CDI unit. I feel that it is a very high quality furler. I placed a small block to lead the furling line on the pulpit. I do not trailer the boat. The ProFurl has been a worthy upgrade for SEADOG.
Ditto on the quality level of the R25. I put mine on after being advised by a rigger I trust who works with all the major furlers. Installed myself and received helpful telephone support from the company. Not for trailering due to the rigid foil. I'm on my third season with it and its bomb proof.
Profurl's are great because they require zero maintenance. Didn't have roller furling on our old C25, but bought the Profurl for our C34 two years ago because of that feature. Yeah, I know, nothing needs NO maintenance, but compared to others, it is less. The system has worked flawlessly since. We did have an old CDI on the 34 that "gave us our jib halyard back" but the upper bearing froze and I couldn't get it down. Meant serious delamination of the furling jib sacrificial cover, recutting the sail, etc. until I could get the whole rig down. Not so bad to have the jib halyard holding things up, and the Profurl upper swivel doesn't require any special considerations for halyard stoppers up top since the swivel has a built in "halyard preventer" - I forgot the real name :)
As someone who trailers all the time, I had nothing but hate and discontent with the CDI FF4 that I paid good money for. At present it resides in my back yard and serves as a home for fire ants!!
First, the furler was hard to rig. Second, it developed several permanent waves in the foil that made rigging even worse. Third, the internal halyard was a joke...had to rig an extension to it to make it usable at all.
