My five year old Garmin 48 has been sending me "weak memory battery signals" for some time now, finally ,still working, I contacted Garmin Support on the internet. I was told that they would replace the battery,"no charge, regardless of age or present ownership" I sent it in and it was returned today, eight days later. They replaced the unit with a new one and entered all waypoints as they appeared on the old GPS.

Ya gotta love a company like that.

My GPS 48 did the same thing and their response and performance was the same. I'll certainly buy Garmin again when I upgrade.

The peculiar thing was that it complained for two years of a failing internal memory battery yet it worked flawlessly. Garmin had proposed an interim fix of replacing the external AA batteries and leaving the unit off for five days, which I did but again it would return to it's old refrain. And so I went the course stated above.

I believe that was a flaw with the G48. Garmin published a [url="http://www.garmin.com/support/faqs/faq.jsp?faq=11"]support memo[/url] saying the internal memory battery had to be replaced. I sent mine in last year and got it back promptly. Actually Garmin sent a new unit with all my way points transferred to the new unit. All it cost was registered shipping.
They were quite helpful on the phone. Yes I’ll stick with Garmin. I hope they come out with a unit that attaches to a Palm type PDA soon.

The stock has rocketed up too -- the Iraq war reminded everybody about GPS and how crucial it will be in the future. ; &gt; D

Thanks John for the support memo. So what do I have to look forward to, three or four more years of trouble free internal memory processing and then return the unit to Garmin and get a new one that will return the same three/ four years trouble free service? Let's see "gamin", that's French right! But Garmin, is that French also, and are we still at odds with the French, do we boycott French products retrospectively <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>. I'm confused...news...not!
