Going to be upgrading sails soon and am looking to put a new headsail system in place. Using hanks on the original dacron genny now. I want a "tuff luff" type system - Tuff Luff themselves seem a bit expensive. Anyone have any suggestions as to where else to look?
If you are not a racer and you are looking to upgrade your sail inventory, you might want to consider a roller furling system. The cost of two headsails(working jib and genoa) and a tuff luff system might be close to a roller furling system and one genoa. I used to be a hanker and now I'm a furler, and it is so much easier that I'll never go back. Just something to think about if you are not a racer.
When I first got my 25 it had roller furling and a nice set of headsails - 3- that the roller furling had obviously replaced. I went to the hanked sails after having a little trouble in pointing with the roller furled headsail. Wouldn't go back unless I gave up club racing.

Doug - on "This Side Up" I have a double headfoil and luff tape on all the jibs. The local experts say that it's worth 3 secs a mile over hanked-on sails. It also allows us to do sail changes while racing and still keep a headsail up during the change - it's almost normal for us to start in 15 knots+/- and have the wind drop to 5 before we finish the first race! (Or go the other way!!) I think that the double foil attachment was $180 - but that was almost 10 years ago <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle> Derek
Derek, I dont want to unstep my mast. I have a hanked on jib. Is it possible to go to a headfoil and lufftape system without unstepping the mast? Is this the same as a roller-furling? I don't understand. Would I use the jib halyard to pull forward on the mast while I disconnected the forestay to attach the furler / headfoil / lufftape? Thanks for you input.
Capn.Dave - if memory serves me correctly, you don't have to undo the forestay to install a headfoil. It slides over the forestay - it's a long stretch of plastic with a round slot at the front to go over the stay, and two grooves at the back to accept the luff tape on the headsails. It comes with a brass prefeeder which has to be tightly taped on the stay below the foil. I can take pics next Saturday if you like. And no, it's not a bit related to roller furling! You still have to haul up a jib using the halyard. Derek
Keep in mond that if you are using hanks now, you would have to have luff tape installed on all your headsails if you are going to use a headfoil type system.
Although it certainly would be illegal for racing, have you tried basically wing on wing with two headsails out. I was thinking that with two slots, you could do it, but don't know for sure.
Doug - that's an interesting idea. The bluewater cruisers use it often but usually are using a genoa and a staysail on two separate halyards. I think you need two whisker poles to do it successfully with a head foil (and I only own one!) It is definitely illegal in PHRF racing. It's real advantage (besides the 3 secs it's worth over hanked-on sails) is to be able to do a headsail change without running bareheaded. In our long distance races it's not uncommon to have to use a 110 going to weather (the whole length of the lake) and then have a 155 ready to hoist and pole out as we round the weather mark for the run downwind. Derek
