I just bought a 1979 Catalina 25....its my first boat! It doesn't have a bilge pump in it and I was wondering where one would go since there is no bilge. Its a swing keel! Can anyone direct me, please.
Congratulations on the new boat! The C25 is a great first boat and you have chosen wisely. Welcome aboard.
As for your question concerning the bilge pump, I can't help you much since I just have a manual pump and a fin keel, but you might try doing a "Search" to get some information on this subject.
Go to the top of this page and select "Search". When the search window comes up, type in "bilge pump" and then select "Catalina 25 Specific Forum".
This should get you some info on this subject, but as always, if you still have questions after perusing those topics, by all means let them fly.
Again, welcome aboard and have some fun with that new boat!
You should have a manual pump on yours. Located inside the sail locker in the cockpit. There would be a cover on the cockpit side that is removed, and a handle would be inserted. (I mention this because to the novice, you might not even realize its there) I would recommend getting a manual pump if there isn't one there. Our manual pump isn't restricted to one location, as there is enough hose to go stretch to most of the aft section of the boat. And, as long as someone on board has appendages, it doesn't matter if we have battery power to operate it.
Secondly, there is a bilge. It runs under the cabin sole and is connected to the area under the galley, the quarterberth and the settees. M
Most people who have an electric pump locate it in one of three locations...There may be others, but these are the locations where I have seen pumps installed the most.
Under the quarterberth by the swing keel cable Under the cabin sole in one of the settees
I just bought one this year as well. I put an electric pump under the companionway, with the hose running out the back. I attached the pump (1500gph) and a float switch to a square of plexiglass, so they'd stand up together under that aft starboard bilge space. Then I hooked up a switch with "auto/manual" to run it. But I don't know that that's the lowest place in the boat. Stephen Z.
An electric bilge pump (in the bilge) is a fair idea if you keep the boat in the water, just to hold down any seepage (including rainwater that leaks in from various places) when you're not around--at a slight risk of running down the battery. But it's not the answer for an emergency when you're out on the boat. When the battery runs out, so does your luck. If you have the built-in manual pump (check the side of your port cockpit seat--it takes a tubular handle), that's better, and a hand pump with a 6-8' hose is also a good idea. You should never need it, but.......
Congratulations on your Cat!

I also purchased my first sailboat this year, however it's still sitting on the trailer, but we're getting close to launching. I also have a swing keel. I would think the lowest point of the bilge would be under the cabin sole( which means floor ), ( be prepared to learn a new vocabulary). Mine has no inspection plate there so it also appears to have "no bilge".I'm soon to install one but I'm not sure exactly where the "best" location on the sole would be. Perhaps your boat has the same situation. Good luck! This forum will be a great help.
My early C25 (sail # 158) doesn't have a manual bilge pump... there are no openings in cockpit or other evidence of a pump ever being present.
I think some early models simply didn't have them. - No Name Clam
You must be right ... I suppose it could have been an option ... I've got hull #68 and it DOES have a manual bilge pump. 'Sure seems strange to me that Catalina would have made an important safety item "optional" ...
Wow, hull #68... do you know anyone with an earlier hull?
I don't know anyone with an older hull number, but there are seven older ones listed in our membership directory ... I don't know any of those owners though.
I can't change my 'handle' now.. I'll lose my post count! Frankly, I like your "handle" ... it's just a little weird to address you as "Clam" when responding to your posts. Now that you've added your real name to your profile, that problem is solved ... Bruce!
