Sandy and I are looking for recommendations for the best tiller extention to install on our catalin 25. I think we would like one that can also hold the tiller/rudder in place.

Any suggestions? Please include make, model #'s, cost, and where available, like West Marine.

I bought a tiller extension a while ago to be installed this spring, maybe even tomorrow. Don't know name or that kind of stuff. My extension is fixed length as opposed to a telescoping tiller extension. I guess that is one question you need to address. which is right for you.

I bought it a nearby dealer for about $31, which includes everything I need.

The Forespar that John referenced offers an interesting option--a socket that can mount on the side of the coaming (seatback) to hold the ball at the end of the handle. You stick the ball in the socket, adjust the length of the extension, twist to lock it, and it'll hold the tiller in that position. It's good only for short distances in steady conditions, but it could be what you're looking for. The only downside is that the socket requires a hole (probably rectangular) in the fiberglass, so it's permanent, although relatively unobtrusive.

I have a Forespar telescoping tiller extension which I almost never use. To hold the tiller as "self-steering" I use a length of bungee cord from stern cleat to stern cleat with a clove hitch around the tiller - works beautifully and it's dirt cheap! Darn, I love that K.I.S.S. principle...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Actually, I agree with Derek... ALthough I just use about 3 wraps with the bungee. That way I can adjust the tiller simply by twisting the wraps a little. To relax the whole thing, I just push the wraps back toward the rudder. Very KISS!!

Couple of options for holding the tiller. 1) a simple peg board set out across the seats side to side with holes drilled in it with pegs put into the holes. The tiller lies between a set of pegs at a given possition to hold it in place. 2) Tiller taimer from West Marine / a simple cord set up lashed from side to side with a clutch mounted on the tiller. Set the possition and tighten down the clutch.
