I am curious to know where people have bought their sails. We are going to install a headsail furling system (probably a CDI) and want a 135 for it (have a 110 and 150 non-RF). My local UK people want $1,200+. Cruising Direct sells one for about 1/2 that. Our sailing consists of day trips (no racing) and we really don't care if we could get another 1/4 knot out of the boat with premium sails.
Any experience with Cruising Direct or other sailmakers?
P.S. I did see the interesting thread from 2002 starting with the Crusing Direct guy's lame attempt to market on the site. That is a real turn-off.
I bought a RF 135 from Catalina Direct last year for a lot less than $1200 including the furler. They handle Ulman Sails. The sail came with a foam luff and tell tails. I'm well pleased with it. You might want to check them out. Seems to me the sail alone was around $700 more or less. At the time I checked into other sails and felt this was the best deal particularly with the foam luff. Hope this helps.

I bought the 135 from cruising direct last summer for the new CDI roller furler and have been well pleased. I am an inland lake sailor, just flirting with racing occassionally. The sail from Cruising Direct comes with the UV protective edge, leach lines, and tell tales, and best of all, they are pre-cut for our boats. I think I received the sail 2-3 weeks from ordering. The people at Cruising Direct were freindly, communicating mostly through email, but were helpful when I called them as well.
When you install the furler, you can leave your no longer used jib halyard for a spinnaker.
I cat not speak for the Crusing Direct jib but I did buy their main sail. Since North sails actually makes the sails under the cruising direct name I figured I could not go wrong (also a good price). I even asked for two North Sails logos so could match my jib.
However, I did have a problem. I hoisted the main yesterday only to find that some genius at cruising direct put a Catalina 22 logo on the sail instead of the "25". I need to call them to fix this issue ASAP.
Alright, I ordered the CDI FF4 furler and a 135% furling genoa from Cruising Direct. It seemed like a tossup between them and Catalina Direct/Ullman.
Wish me luck putting it all together! Anyone who's done this have an idea how much line I should get for the furler? Also, has anyone rigged a CDI furler with all the leads on the stanchions instead of embedding the first one in the deck? (I hate making holes in my boat)
The first fairlead has to direct the furling line to the drum at a right angle to assure proper spooling of the line on the drum when the sail is unfurled. I couldn't see any way of doing this short of drilling and mounting the first fairlead to the deck. Fortunately, on the '83 C25, this entialed drilling through the short piece of deck directly over the forward part of the anchor locker. You shouldn't have to worry about drilling for that first lead.

I have a CDI and the fair lead was installed by a previous owner without drilling into the deck. The PO took a small line and tied it to the pulpit bases and the fair lead it attached to that line. The angle is perfect and it does not require a whole in the deck.
The PO also installed leads on each stanchion pole, attached with a clip. These leads are basically a guide, for the furling line to the aft cabin.
I don't know how the geometry of your furling drum differs from mine but I have a Harken furler and my first fairlead is attached to the bow pulpit. I've been using it for two season now without any problems. I'll take a picture and post it if I can get out to the boat before the weekend.
Just to follow up, I posted above that the main sail that I bought from Cruising Direct came with the wrong Catalina logo (22). They have since sent out two new logos (w/ the correct num ber) overnight.
I am happy with their customer service and so far the quality of the product. I guess time will tell.
I bought my CDI FF4 from Sailnet, and had them (AirForce Sails) recut my 155 to fit the luff. Very happy with it! Why would you only get a 135 and not a 150 or 155?
When you cut the luff of the furling system be very, very very careful that you measure and cut at the right place! I measured two times or three times, and I went to cut and cut at the 25 foot mark. I saw the mark and went to cut and as the extra extrusion fell to the ground I saw the real cut mark and said to my self, "Oh OH, you dumb #$$$%##@!@!"
CDI was very good in getting me a replacement, but it was extra I wasn't counting on.

We wanted an "all around sail" and sailing in Charleston Harbor is, more often than not, too breezy for a 150+ headsail.

A 150+ would be a bit much for the prevailing winds in my area also(today, the winds were especially perky at 20knts) and I would probably have to reef a 150 more often than not. If I ever have to replace my 140, I will likely replace it with one the same size.
