I just sent my furling genny off to have the sacrificial sunbrella changed. This will complete my color scheme change from pacific boooo to ERIN GREEN! Complete except for one detail -- the name of the boat is in blue. Here'e my question: When I order the new applique I want to change the name from "Salty Dog" to something more unique -- "Saline Bitch."
Since they mean the same thing, will Neptune be upset? Will I have to bury a dead cat at midnight to head off misfortune or does that just work to cure warts?
Cruising for babes eh? Let me know if it works! Unfortunately the only way to appease Neptune these days is to do the sacrificial offering of the landcreature on the starting line of some high level sailboat race, (Say the Rolex cup) within 60 seconds of the gun......
I've many descriptions of renaming ceremonies. Most of them involve scantily clad women and copious amounts of booze.
Ok, I know you're asking... "so how is that different from an typical day at the office"?
The answer is "Not Much"... there are a few details like writing the old name of the boat on a slip of paper, reading a speech to Neptune telling him of the name change, and finally tossing the message in the drink... ok, that's done... back to the scantily clad women.
A google search on 'Boat Renaming Ceremony' will return over 1,000 other bits of advice.

I don't know who else out there has this feeling, but I always thought that "Salty Dog" referred to a MALE dog. "See that old fella over there? He's a salty old dog." "Saline Bitch" on the other hand, (although litterally a female dog) suggests human females who are somewhat distasteful, or maybe a little uncouth (sp?) "I like my women a little on the trashy side."?? Better do the unnaming ceremony.
Glad to hear it. My grandfather, a sailor for 50 years, wont even get on a boat that has a name that could possibly offend or tempt Neptune, ie "over easy". Superstitious I guess, but I will follow his advice in naming my newly aquired C25, Still contemplating the name at this time. Dan
Neptune (aka Poseidon) is the god of the seven seas and all the inland waters. He needs appeasement or he'll have Aeolus whip up a hurricane in your path!! If you haven't done a correct naming ceremony, with copious libations poured to him, he may regard your vessel as a UFO (unidentified floating object) and get REALLY upset! Derek
Bah, humbug! But that's the legend. We just changed osmepneo's name and have had no problems, except that #$#%#^ Honda ob. Mmmmm!

Don - it seemed that every time that we wanted to go somewhere specific on the Big Cat at the coast, that the wind was dead on the nose. Now this boat has had two previous names with no ceremonies held. So I did two de-naming ceremonies and then a re-naming one for its newest name "By George" - we haven't had the wind on the nose since. Probably coincidence, but... Derek
Your story certainly is a chuckler! I enjoyed itIf did one for osmepneo, a denaming ceromoney and renaming ceromony do thisnk my $%^% Honda would work better?

OK. Here is my version based upon the previous posts. I require some name verification from my wife. However, following is the preliminary announcement:
Announcing: Formal Boat Denaming and Renaming Ceremonies
When: 26 July 2003 at 7:00 p.m. – OK to start without me if I am late.
Where: Slip D24, Marina Del Sol (1203 Twin Oaks Blvd.), Kemah, Texas, 77565 USA
BYOB
This is an invitation to the formal boat "denaming ceremony" to wipe the slate clean in preparation for the renaming based upon Vigor's inter-denominational denaming ceremony as found on the World Wide Web. The ceremony will consist of five parts:
1 an invocation,
2 an expression of gratitude,
3 a supplication,
4 a re-dedication and
5 a libation.
Precursors
First I must remove all physical traces of the boat's old name from the boats. This includes taking any log book ashore, along with any other papers that bear the old name. I must check for offending books and charts with the name inscribed. I shall sand away the old name from the lifebuoys, transom, top-side, dinghy, and oars. We cannot place the new name anywhere on the boat before the denaming ceremony is carried out. Some prefer to wait 24-hours to give any lingering demons a chance to clear out. We plan to press on.
Afterwards
We pop the cork, shake the bottle and spray Champagne on the bow. Subsequently, we may each find such beverages to consume ourselves. It may also be possible to burn a few burgers at the clubhouse to take back to the boat.
In the name of all who have sailed aboard this ship in the past, and in the name of all who may sail aboard her in the future, we invoke the ancient gods of the wind and the sea to favor us with their blessing today.
"Mighty Neptune, king of all that moves in or on the waves; and mighty Aeolus (pronounced EE-oh-lus), guardian of the winds and all that blows before them:
"We offer you our thanks for the protection you have afforded this vessel in the past. We voice our gratitude that she has always found shelter from tempest and storm and enjoyed safe passage to port.
"Now, wherefore, we submit this supplication, that the names whereby this vessel has hitherto been known (_Summer Rhapsody and Lil’ Buddy_), be struck and removed from your records.
"Further, we ask that when she is again presented for blessing with another name, she shall be recognized and shall be accorded once again the selfsame privileges she previously enjoyed.
"In return for which, we rededicate this vessel to your domain in full knowledge that she shall be subject as always to the immutable laws of the gods of the wind and the sea.
"In consequence whereof, and in good faith, we seal this pact with a libation offered according to the hallowed ritual of the sea.
Christening Ceremony
"I name this ship _”Summer Affair”__ and may she bring fair winds and good fortune to all who sail on her."
Everything necessary will be included in the ceremony. However, we would not want to leave evidence on the web for the Deamon's Rights advicates now would we?
I intend to appease Neptune by bringing a couple of cases of beer, a couple bottles of still wine and a few bottles of bubbly. I think that Neptune may permit continuing libation past this amount on the BYOB basis.
BTW, spouse suggested the new name; and now rejects the idea. So, either the name or date will change. I will offer up some potential names in the next day or two for her consideration.
Is there any chance you may invoke the ire of Neptune when you start "recycling" all those refreshments. I mean, wouldn't you be making him the Tidy Bowl Man?
You guys got me thinking.....maybe I'll splash an O'douls over the bow at the start of the next cruise........mumble some Zen wisdom and float a veggieburger.......so many people can't be wrong....right?

John,
Did your spouse decide that "Summer Affair"'s connotation might be a little impermanent?

It is said that when fishing for a meal you should throw back the first fish that you catch. This will please Neptune and he will reward the fisherman with an abundance of fish for the rest of the day.
I do the catch and release anyway, so I've never tried this.
