Here are the results in order of finish: C25 Tall Rig: Milby (Captiva Wind), Stellingwerf (Charis II), and Michael (C’est La Vie). In C25 Standard: Meinert (Longwind), Pinter (Liberty), Hunt (Liquid Assets) and Rodda (Sun Caper). In C250: Beamer (Daylight Again), Carney (The Preferred Venue), and Rodkey (Wanderen Star).

The Regatta week-end in Syracuse, IN was a tremendous success- we all had a ton of laughs, great racing and great company. After everyone makes it home (I know Clif is still out and suspect Bryan is still on the road back to Colorado), we can look forward to getting all the details, including pictures posted, soon.

For my part, I enjoyed the event, the wonderful hosts and the opportunity to meet so many of the folks I've had the privilege of working with over email and telephone. Bill Meinert did a fantastic job pulling this together, and many, many others worked hard to make this the success it was. Thanks all!<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>

Bryan Beamer wowed everyone with his C-250. <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> In three of the four races on Saturday, Bryan’s was the second boat to cross the finish line out of all the boats racing, and he consistently dogged the leader all around the racecourse. On average, the first boats across the finish line (C-25s) on Saturday only beat him by about 1 1/2 minutes per race. In some races he finished much closer. (I don’t have the finishing times for the race on Sunday.) To those who have doubted the racing ability of the C-250, Bryan indisputably proved that a well-prepared and well-sailed C-250 can compete with and even beat tall and standard rig C-25s.

Bryan flew a 135% roller-furling headsail, and had a fresh coat of VC 17 bottom paint on the boat. His crew included his father, who is an outstanding racer, but who hasn’t raced much in recent years. Bryan also has not raced much recently, but he describes himself as a youngster as a “dock rat,” crewing for any racer who would let him. He obviously inherited his dad’s ability. I know about Bryan’s sailing background, because he and his dad raced at Brookville Lake in southern Indiana until the early 1980s, and his dad beat the socks off me the first time I ever raced, and many times afterward. As most of you know, Bryan now lives and sails with his family in Colorado, and coming to the Nationals was a long haul for him. With his performance, Bryan made all the rest of us respect the C-250. <img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>

Ed e-mailed me a brief article and a couple of pictures which I sent to the Mainsheet. The deadline for the Aug. issue was Sunday (6/15) and I begged to get the info in late.
I would really like to see more stories and photos for the Nov. issue. So....everyone who went please jot down your thoughts and stories and get them to me along with a picture or two.

It's nice to hear about a race without hearing of protests, whining, or lawsuits.

Way to go C25 and 250 racers.

Great report on what sounds like a fun time was had by all... Congrats to all who raced, skippers and crew.

Good showing Bryan... were anxious to hear the details...what winds etc.

I went to Syracuse looking for ride, and about ten days before the championship Steve Milby e-mailed asking if I would be interested. We had a great time at the regatta, and Steve is an excellent skipper.

I also want to echo Steve's comments about Bryan's 250. He sailed it very competitively, suggesting basic equallity between the c25/250 rigs.

Perhaps later today I'll get a few minutes and share some thoughts about the racing, some things I learned or had reinforced in my my mind.

Truly agreat w/e and good fellowhip. Bill Mienert and crew really did a bang-up job of organizing and managing the regatta. Good job guys!

Re. Winds and pother tidbits

The winds during the Nationals were very interesting with two or three very distinct winds over the race course.

There was a land mass that lifted Port tack boats when you got close enough, so that you sailed very close to the lay line. However, after clearing the end of the peninsula, the wind was governed by a marshy area and substatially headed port tack, so that starboard was favored. Within both of these winds there were several substatial shifts. At one point, port was headed so we tacked right into a header and starboard was headed. That kind of condition seemed prevalent over the entire race course.

Wind strength was light to moderate, building during the day. Saturday's first race was sailed in 5-10, and the forth race in 10-15. Sunday morning's was was basically from the same direction, and the peninsula and marshy area effects were similar, but the wind was very, very patchy. Everyone sailed into a hole or two during this race, and got to sit. Steve, Jody and I spent the entire leg watching for wind, and we moved to wind when we could, even if that meant sailing relatively short tacks. the secret was staying in the wind. In that race we stayed in the center of the course, seeking the peninsula effect and rounded first significantly ahead of Bill and Bryan.

One other thing seemed very important!

Both Steve and Bryan had new paint and good finishes on the bottom. I suspect that made a big difference in the perfomance of their boats. I know it does in other conditions, no reason it didn't hear!

Steve's crew (Jody and me) fit together like a glove. We had hoped to sail Friday afternoon, but when the boat was ready thunderstorms were in the area. So our first sail was on the way to race course. But very quickly we discovered the best way to work together, so that we could keep the boat moving while we tacked, and so that accelerate and sail with good speed on both tacks. None of us (Steve, Jody or me) had sailed together before the first race.

The racing was fun. I don’t get to do that very often. The boat did great. Saturday we had winds around 8 to 10 in the 3rd race we had some 12 to 15. For Sunday’s only race we had 0 to 8.

The first time my Dad stepped on this boat was 45min before race 1 on Saturday. Brad and I have been sailing together for 2 years now so he knows the boat pretty well.

I was definitely nervous before the 1st race. I had my dad who was a great racer back in the late 70’s and early 80’s and I definitely wanted the father’s approval on the boat and my performance.

The first 2 races we were the first boat around the windward mark. We crossed the line 2nd 4 out of the 5 races and 3rd one time. What Steve did not mention is he was the boat that crossed the line first, 4 out of 5 times and 2nd by 1 second one time. Steve sailed 5 great races and in my eyes is the best c25 sailor in the country.

The 5th race we had very little wind and it was spotty. Steve was able to get into his own little pocket of wind and sail away to the windward mark. That was by far the biggest margin across the line before us. I don’t have the official time but I think he beat us by 4 or 5 minutes Bill in his c25 standard rig was a minute behind us. Then it was about 12 minutes to the next boat across the line.

Here is the total time for the 1st 4 races for the 3 class winners

Milby tr/fk 122:44
Beamer c250 128:26
Meinert sr/sk 138:16

We all know the talk about the c250 but looking at these times I think the c250 can sail with is sister boats very well.

Now about the non-racing stuff. I had the pleasure of meeting a lot of people that I only see in names on this form. The whole weekend was perfect from the weather to the dinner cruise. Bill Meinert and the Southeast Bay Club hosted a great event. For those of you that could not go if the future National events are this good everyone in this association needs to experience it at lease once.

I am vacationing in Cincinnati with my family. My wife and I are from this area and they flew in here on Saturday. I will be heading back to Colorado with Daylight Again on the 21st. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of the pictures that were taken this weekend.
Here are a few we took.

I will close this long statement with this. The best part of this weekend was making the drive here with my buddy Brad who took off 4 days of work to go with me and sailing on my boat with my Dad. We live 1200 miles away and don’t get to do things like this and I think he now knows I was listening to him about sailing and life.

Daylight Again has made it back home. After the 2976 mile round trip from Colorado Springs to Syracuse then to Cincinnati Ohio back to Colorado Springs we had absolutely zero problems with the truck, trailer or boat during the road trip.

My wish I have for next years Nationals is we get more boats traveling to the location than the 2 boats we had this year. I do agree with Derek lets have it in the middle of the country. Any takers.

Congratulations to all on a successful regatta. I am only sorry I couldn't make it. Hawaii was fun, but it still would have been nice to meet many of you personally.

hey bryan!
i share your happiness with having your father crew for you.
my father has had congestive heart failure for the last 5 years and one thing you learn later in life is how much your father can mean to you. the joy you shared will near be forgotten by either of you nor will the times you spent together.you don't need to live in a castle to have a king for a father.
congratulation on the win but, especially on the bond you and your father seem to have.

That was very special for me. Sailing with my dad on my boat was great. The best thing about the trip was the ride back to Colorado Springs from Cincinnati Ohio. I got to spend 22 hours in the truck talking about old times and new times. I hope we can do that again.
