I'm just about to install a boarding/swim ladder on the 'ol '77 FK/SR. After looking at the real estate and access available, I think it's best to consult this pool of knowledge before breaking out the Black & Decker.
Ladder is going to be mounted on the starboard side, as the motor mount is already to port. What I've found is there is only clear access to what will be the 2 lower mounting points, via the hatch behind the aft quarterberth. From there, it looks like setting those 2 lower points 4''-5'' above waterline would be ideal (given the limited space.
Obvious question then is the upper mounting points. Am I looking at cutting an access port (or ports) to gain entry to the transom ?? At this point I do not see how else to get into that area and still be able to get the thing securely attached. Or have I got my concept of the whole thing wrong ?
Figured others had already gone thru this, so it'd be better to ask first. Also, any rudder problems (eg - limited travel) encountered after mounting ladders.
Thanks to all in advance for their help & advice !!
Cut one hole not two. Cut it after you have been to the marine store and bought a deck access plate. 8 to 12 dollars. Be sure not to cut the hole to large use the deck plate as a template. Be sure to place the ladder far enough outboard to not hit the rudder. <img src="http://www.westmarine.com/images/full/03318_f.jpg" border=0>
