Larry, leave it to me to ask a non-sailing question . . . in the second photo, is the area that appears to be a rock slide the result of a mine (abandoned I would presume?)

We launched at Tahoe Keys, which is the only ramp at Lake Tahoe with enough depth for a Catalina 25, and which also allows overnight parking. Most of the public launch ramps are posted "Day Use Only - No Overnight Parking - Tow Away After 10:00 pm", so the private marinas at Tahoe Keys and Meeks Bay are the only places you can launch for a multi-day cruise, and Meeks Bay has been too shallow for a Catalina 25 for many years. As low as the lake is, I was barely able to get through the entrance channel; the sounder was showing "0.0" (depth under keel) most of the way, and I could feel the tip of the keel dragging bottom in some places.

I don't know about any mines, but that scar on the hillside has been there for as long as I can remember. My guess is it's the result of an avalance or landslide. Maybe the topsoil there is just too thin to support re-growth of trees?
