I’m afraid the Japanese used Neptune without any idea of what they were talking about.
The Greek and Roman myths are not stories but the basis for the ancient religions.
” Sailor Neptune” is a name that is out of context and bears no relation to the wrathful God that Poseidon/Neptune represented to the Greeks and Romans and to sailors the world over today.

You wrote;
“I apologize for my lack of knowledge in the trait of sailing, as i have only been a few times…”
If you ever get into sailing you will, like us, take Neptune seriously.

It has to do with renaming your boat.

Renaming boats, to the superstitious, tends to be unlucky. Has to do with Neptune, god of the seas, (not the planet or some japanese cartoon character - study Roman gods) all of a sudden sees a boat on his waters he's unfamiliar with. Seems he doesn't like anyone using his waters without permission. He'll get riled and create some bad sailing conditions.

So to rename a boat, you have to go through a denaming ceremony and a renaming ceremony, which involves asking Neptune to recognize the boat with the new name and dumping a lot of alcohol into the water.

I know that, I just don't get "Sailor" 's references.

Oh, I think it's some kind of japanese cartoon - sailor neptune. Don't know what balutha is.

John Mason,

Your explanation of denaming and renaming is good, but you left out the "virgin" option instead of lots of alcohol.

Jim,
You're right, I did. I don't mind wasting a bit of alcohol overboard, but a perfectly good virgin......owww!

Stephen,
From everything I've read about it, Neptune wouldn't be happy about that. He likes a generous amount of the good stuff, straight. I used half a bottle of mead wine and drank the rest (with friends, not all myself).
