I had shared part of this on another post but I thought I would share the pain here. My masthead broke during a Kansas storm and the mast came tumbling down. I had never really considered the masthead to be something to be concerned about. This is my first season with this boat so I don't know the history of this masthead but a word of caution to others. I have a 1983 tall rig, retrofit wing keel. <img src="http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b3d935b3127cce8abc994989ab0000001610" border=0>
Not funny. I had a 1983 tall rig also. Guess what. My mast head (Crane also failed) Founf it on inspection of the rig. It had a crack running forward and aft like a smile from main sheav pin to pin.
Not sure of the exact wind speeds at the lake but according to people who lived there, it was a pretty bad storm. It sounds like the masthead for that year may have been a problem if someone else had a similar experience. I don't know if the furler came undone or not. I know that it had unfurled but not sure if that was before or after the mast fell. It looks like the mast head just split into pieces. I'm just glad I wasn't sailing when it happened. I had just had my daughter and my grandkids out on it the weekend before. It's also hard to inspect your masthead mid season unless you drop the mast.
