Way back at the beginning of the year, Alan Therrien sent a query on where to find a shop manual for his outboard -- the reason being that he thought it was time to change the water impeller. Anyone have guidelines as to how often this should be done? Nowhere in my manual do I see any recommendations to do this periodically.

Thanks, Max

Tohatsu recommends you replace the impellor at the start of each season per the manual.

Max,

The intervals for replacing the impeller on an outboard depend on the type of use the motor is exposed to. If you run the lower unit into shallows wherein the prop turns up loads of sand and the motor uses that mixture to cool its innards and you are doind this constantly then you may consider the seasonal impeller change. I sail daily, weather permitting, and haven't ever run the prop into the muck. The Johnson 9.9 that I use is eleven seasons old and other than flushing the motor once a few years ago there have been no indication that an impeller change was indicated. I changed an impeller once about fourty years ago and found that the exchange was an exercise in futility. It wasn't necessary. But youth somethimes makes demands of us that experience prove to be unnecessary. My dad was such a person. He ran a '38 Willys sedan until its demise sometime in the eighties never having changed the spark plugs. He'd clean them periodically but never changed them. Matter of fact I inherited that car and ran it through my teen years until it was retired and shipped to the summer house where it was used as a power source for a generator that dad built.
It may still be there, don't know, haven't checked. It probably would start right up if primed.

Sorry for the ramble-on.

Max,

I did change out my impeller after three seasons of limited use. I found that the original was not worn enough to warrant replacement. I'm just one of those people who like to be sure everything is "like new", limiting my chances for breakdowns at sea.

I ended up purchasing the Evinrude shop manual through a dealer (expensive, about 1/2 boat unit). The manual is good, but not the best.

Hope this info helps.

Alan,

Thanks to your note, I purchased the manual too and it's a good one. I think I may not need to mess around with the impeller, though. Thanks for the followup report on the minimal wear to confirm that if it's not broke, I don't need to fix it. My 9.9 is about 5 years old now and gets used all year around in fresh water. The only problem I've had with it is the idle jet got gunked up a few summers ago here in the AZ heat and required a through carb cleaning. I've been religious about adding gas stabilizer since then, and it's been working very well.

Max,

Glad to hear you've had good luck with your outboard. I just started using a product called Carbon Guard, which Evinrude recommends for keeping the engine clean. It gets mixed with the gas, and seems to be working well. The engine is running smoother this season.

Smoothly sailing,

Alan,

I thought I'd add an update as a result of recent maintenance on the Evinrude 9.9 4stroke. My local outboard mechanic recommended water pump service this time -- he said it's a good idea every 3 years, depending on use. So I agreed -- good thing too. He said the gasket around the water pump was leaking a little, so replaced it along with the impeller.

Looks like your PM approach is the right one after all ......<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>.

Do search on e-bay. You may not find a specific shop manual but rather one that covers several models. Cost seen to be about $20. Should have the basic things covered, water pump, fuel filters, carb adjustment.
