I need to replace the keel winch on my C-25, and got a price for a winch with and without the crank handle. Question is, do the new winches have the same design for how the handle attaches? My current handle goes on a quarter-inch wide slot, it only sits on the winch about half an inch, and it recently slipped off, dropping the keel a few feet before the cam caught. Does the new winch have a handle that goes on further, so it can't inadvertently slip off? Any recommendations about winches from various makers?

I just bought the new winch kit from Catalina Direct and plan to install it next weekend. The new winch is very similar to the old one, but my old handle does not quite fit the new winch. The winch itself is a standard Fulton "work winch", with the handle and crank adapter custom made by Catalina. The problem appears to be the new crank adapter, the piece with the male tang that fits the female slot in the handle, is slightly larger diameter. If you buy just a new winch, you might be able to transfer the old crank adapter to the new winch and use your old handle, but if the threads on the winch handle shaft are different, you will be stuck buying a new handle for $50.00 more.

I replaced my winch last year, ordering it from Catalina Direct. Since I had a perfectly good crank, I ordered just the winch, only to discover that the winch as supplied was missing the adapter. A follow-up call to CD got me the adapter, which at the time they didn't sell separately (but sent me because they love me). The new CD catalog lists the adapter as a separate item. Give them a call.

Thanks. I'll give them a call and see what's up.
Meanwhile, does anyone know about the jib winches? Mine are Lewmar single speed 7, and the plastic tower inside one of them broke off. Do they make rebuilding kits for those jib winches?
