The EE (Evil Empire) sells a metal cleaner that works wonders on stainless - just rub it on and wipe it off. I've also used Wichinox after the polish to re-pacifate any areas that keep getting rusty. It's a constant battle on the Big Cat at the coast - salt air treats stainless with disdain! Derek
I use Mother's Chrome and stainless cleaner. you'll find it at motorcycle and auto supply stores. It is very inexpensive compared to yachting supplies.
Another great product is "MAAS". It comes in a tube as a paiste and is easy to apply. It removes rust, stains, etc. and leaves an ultra thin barrier coat to protect the metal. Apply it like any metal polish. Your stainless will shine like a brand new dime in a goats ass!
Practical Sailor magazine mentioned a product with which I've had excellent results: Miracle Cloth from West Marine. It performed quite well on Charm's pulpits and stanchions.
I like NEVR-DULL, a non-abrasive metal polish/cleaner. I've used this stuff on brass and the brass came out looking like bright shiny gold.
The best part about NEVR-DULL is that its not a liquid, but a solvent impregnated wadding. You simply tear off a piece and rub it on whatever it is you are polishing, then wipe off with a clean rag. No runs, no drips, no errors.
When I was in the Navy, we used this stuff to make brass deck drains shine like jewelry.
We were introduced to NEVER-DULL earlier this year. It has worked very well on the stanchions. We also used it on the winches, binnacle and compass metal support.
After the application of NEVER DULL, we used Fleetwax on the metal and it continues to look great.
We had used WMP metal polish but it didn't last very long, although it started out fine.
Seems to us that the waxing after the cleaning is real help for longevity.
My can of barely used NEV-R-DULL came with the boat six seasons ago, and I still have not used it all up. I was delighted to find it there because it brought back childhood memories from gowing up in England of polishing the silver before Christmas each year. While it works very well on the ssteel, I have to confess to using it rather less frequently than I once helped polish the silver. Childhood habits die hard...
