Being new to the sailing fraternity, i have a question that probably is on the stupid side, but, what the heck. I sail in corpus christi texas, with a tall rig 86. I have recently reefed the main sail to get more clearance under the boom for a bimini. When sailing, I notice a flutter in the leech. (had the same when not reefed). Is this fixed by a boom vang? I sail next to boats in the same wind and they do not have this flutter. Thanks dan 86FK/TR
Dan - flutter in the mainsail leech can have several causes. The mainsail itself is stretched. The topping lift is too tight. The reefing line at the clew is not pulled all the way down to the boom. Not enough tension on the vang, and lastly maybe your bimini is preventing the boom from coming down far enough to tighten the leech. The guys who have biminis may know some more. Derek

Derek's right. Leech flutter always reminds me that I've forgotten to collapse the two center tensioning frames on my bimini.

As Don L. says, pull on your leech line to take the flutter out of the sail. BUT, don't pull it so much that it curls the leech over to much. Just enough to take the flutter out. Leech tell tales help a lot with this adjustment. You want to make sure the air is exiting the main smoothly.
My '85 TR had the same problems. I just had a sail loft shorten the main (from the top) by a couple feet to allow use of the bimini without reefing. I also had them install a leach line which it didn't have. That cured the luff (flutter). Both mods cost about $175. By the way, allowing the leach to continue luffing will fatigue the sail material, so it's a worthy investment.
Thanks for the input, I do not have a leech line, but am looking into adding one and altering my sail to work with the bimini top height. Thanks again Dan 86
