Well, we here in the LI Sound area had a front come through and blow all the fog, haze and humidity away just in time for this past weekend. Clear skies and wind. 10-15 building to 15-20kts from the NNW. Since the wind was offshore, the seas were flat until you got well out into BI Sound. Teasel picked up her heels and washed all the slime off her bottom. Seriously, 6.5kts under reefed main and 150 Genoa off the wind, and 5.5 to 6kts under main and 110 to weather. Once the tide changed and was into the wind a chop developed that with the normal tide rip in the Race resulted in a wet ride, but WHO CARES. Block Island and Montauk clear on the horizon to the South, and not much traffic. It was great, and well worth the wait. Just had to holler YAHOO!!!
We headed SW on Long Island Sound toward NYC yesterday with some guests, making close to 5 on the genny alone in the very gusty off-shore breeze. The gusts were whipping the water into a frothy black, occasionally heeling us close to 20 degrees with just the headsail. A little twist helped level us up. I left all 130% out to keep going in the 15-knot "lulls".
The Manhattan skyline stuck up clearly above the horizon... Port Jeff, LI, was visible the other way... Block was a little over the horizon for us.
We were gaining on and then starting to pass a 50+ footer that was under main alone, but he decided that was enough, pulled out a jib, and we were put back in our place. (I shoulda hoisted the main, right? )
Glorious weekend--it's been a while! September is almost here!

I had my best day sailing yesterday of the season (so far!) Winds were west, 13 gusting 15. The seas were fairly smooth with a nice west 3 foot swell at 14 seconds (last few weekends it's been a washing machine - 3 feet at 4 seconds).
There was a big sailboat race going on (define sailboat race? - two sailboats in sight of each other). No not that kind, a real one, but I sailed within sight of the racers for a long time. I was the slowest boat compared to them but I was having a blast - charging through the waves on a beam reach. I didn't have my speedo plugged in but was making at least 6 knots all day. It was a really fun day.
Figures with my luck, I had to take my daughter back to school in Rochester, seems like I missed a great weekend around here.
Did see a 30+ footer step his mast on the Erie Canal at a lock. Had it down & up with no problems. The canal looks like it can be a bit tough, being so narrow and with the lock walls made of concrete. Yikes I can just hear the gel coat screeching as the water level is changed. Must have to set a lot of fenders out?
I'm glad to hear some others were able to take advantage as well. I haven't been able to get out much, but when I have it's been choice. The forecast for the labor Day weekend isn't so hot right now; it seems a front is expected to stall over us (plus ca change, plus les meme choses!), giving unsettled conditions. Hope it changes before Sat. Val, how was the Great South Bay, pretty flat or do you get much of a chop in the shallower water?
