We crossed the upbound lane feeling good about the assurance from the freighter captain that no upbound vessels were near. Closer to the downbound lane, I heard the yet distant sound of a ships foghorn to the northeast and expected it was the ship that had been communicated with. Visibility had improved slightly to about 300 yards, which isn’t very comforting considering the ore boats are longer than that. The horn was heard at one-minute intervals for about five minutes and growing closer. Then I didn’t hear it. Eight minutes went by and no sound. I concluded the boat had possibly passed south of us as they are quite fast and we were yet about two miles from the lane. I had considered stopping short of the lane and would have had I continued to hear the horn getting closer to our northeast.

When a mile and a half from the lane, suddenly the ship loomed from the fog north of us.

Arlyn... Your speculations on the captain's motivations are amusing, but I have to wonder why he didn't contact you instead of... (I won't give away the ending.) I guess they need something to amuse themselves with out there...

Another great travelogue!

Carbon Monoxide (which we all exhale) is what they follow....

Nice writing, and nice web site Arlyn, Thanks.

My Honda exhales that, but I hope I never do!
