Our original "Standard DS10" depth sounder is shot. Is there a replacement that will plug right in? Any suggestions? We want the best within reason.

How about a compass. It seems like one that permanently mounts below the depth sounder would be handy. Other Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

These are very personal decisions. You need to look at the instruments on other boats. The way people install them, the wiring needed. Ask lots of questions, the owners of instruments have strong feelings about them. You will get a good feel for what you want to do.

Scott,

Re: "<i>... depth sounder ... replacement ... the best within reason.</i>"

I really like using a fish finder for monitoring depth. Many of the less expensive ones come with a surface mount bracket with is really easy to install. I wanted a more sturdy mount that wouldn't be as likely to snag lines in the cockpit. I made up a teak "picture frame" to fit around the display head of the fish finder. It still sticks out 2 or 3 inches from the bulkhead.

Re: "<i>How about a compass</i>"?

I installed one of the "Plastimo Contest 101" see-through steering compasses on the opposite side from my main electrical panel (so as to minimize electro-magnetic interference). There is special non-magnetic field compass lighting wire available. I routed my compass wiring inside of and behind things so it isn't visible or "snaggable".

I sewed up custom fitted Sunbrella covers for both instruments.

Do you know what is shot--the read-out or the transducer? You can buy each item separately from Standard Horizon in Salt Lake City. They are really helpful. When mine went out, I plugged in a replacement transducer and let it over the side to check if I got a read-out. I did. So the head, or read-out unit, turned out to be fine. When I went to install the new transducer, I discovered the po had replaced the old head with an S-H head, but had left the old transducer (different manufacturer!) in place. It had presumably worked for a while, and then quit. So I had to bore a larger hole in the hull for the new S-H transducer. But that is a story for another time... It has all worked fine for the past five seasons. The transducer cost me $65, and it is the most likely thing to have gone wrong with your unit.
