My toilet pump was leaking around the top seal. Now the whole mechanism stopped working. I am hoping there is a kit or something to rebuild the pump. Has anyone else done this repair? How hard is it? Where can I get the parts?

Yep there are kits. Yep you can rebuild the toilet. You might want to consider a new toilet also. $100 to 120 dollars new.

I've done it and it wasn't the best time I've spent aboard. It wasn't all that hard, but it's miserable work. Sailnet sells a new Wilcox Crittedon Head Mate toilet for $149.00. The complete repair kit is $49.95. There are two major possibilities regarding your problem, either the leather cup on the end of your pump is dried or worn out or your joker valve is broken or stuck open. Those two are the most common causes of head failure, but there are be others. Did you try to fill the bowl with some water to prime the system and soften the lead cup? Changing the wax bushing is not a bad job at all since all you need to do is unscrew the handle and the plastic packing gland, insert the new wax bushing, and reassemble. That part of the job concerns working only on the "clean" side of the system. Frankly, I would never do a complete head overhaul again and would rather replace the entire head since it's such a lousy job and anyway, the overhaul kit costs a full 1/3 the cost of a new unit.
