I have a split backstay that is not factory made, but consists of a wire rider on the shortened backstay. One side of the rider is attached to the transom on the starboard side, and the other is attached to a vang on the port. This because the engine is on the starboard side.
My problem is that at the end of each season when I check my rigging I will have to replace the rider wire because it has begun to show signs of wear. Just enough little stickers to give you the impression that the wire will fail the next season, and if it didn't fail, would give you a number of bloody fingers.
triley, The wire should be 7x19 type stainless. Try going to a turning block with a larger diameter sheave, with a groove the correct size for your wire. You might check the current block for groove width and any sharp edges on the groove that may be speeding up the wear you are getting.
