Help....Spent last 4 days at the lake putting together our major regatta of the year. Results; great time had by all, awesome sailing and a broken lifeline stancion on my boat. Good thing it was the Freedom 21 that I hit and not the 35 foot S-2 our commodore sails. I looked in the Catalina Direct catalog and it looks like they only sell the life-lines. Does anyone know if stancions are available? Appreciate any input. Will call CD also.
Jim-I put out the word to our club about next July's trip and I think we might have a few interested people. Will get with you in a couple of days when my brain gets back on track.
Thanks...I found it in my parts list also. I could not find it in the Upgrades & Re-Fit section with a picture. Just goes to show you my wife is right, I look for something for 2 seconds, give up and ask for help!
I will have it on the way tomorrow!
Sorry to hear about your damage, but should be fixable. I was informally racing my friend in his Cal 28 and had so much fun! However, I did things I wouldn't have done while cruising (tacked much closer to the rocks, etc.)
Anyways, it will be great fun to plan the cruise next summer. I think we have about 5 to 10 boats interested. Hopefully that means 5 or so will actually come!
It was a typical port/starboard convergance. We were cooking along in about 12 knots with our 150 and I knew he was out there somewhere. The skipper had an inexperienced crew and he himself admitted at the bar that night he was not looking at the time. I had just told Michelle to duck down and look under the genny because we should be close to him and that's when he hit. Fortunately the damage was fairly minor and no one was hurt. I took my penalty and sailed to place 6th out of 28 boats. It was my first ever collision. I had always been afraid of one at the starting line, but this was out in the middle of the lake with all the room in the world. Just to skipper's who let diligence slip for a moment. Lesson learned. Won't stop me from trying to put every bit of speed on the boat that I can. I will have windows put in when I order my much needed new 150.

Patrick, what lake did you sail / race on? Is it Elephant Butte Lake? I sailed on that lake a bunch of years ago with a friend who had his S2 (I think it was 26 or 27 feet long) there. His name is Ken Tighe and his wife's is Johanna. I graduated from high school with Ken and he occasionally makes his way out to San Diego to sail. He lives in Albuquerque also (did I spell that right?).
Ken is currently the Rio Grande Sailing Club's Commodore. He still sails an S-2, although now he has a 35' He recently quit the banking gig and I think he is looking for work out there somewhere. He bought a trailer for his big boat, is looking for a truck to haul it with and wants to spend some time on the water in California.
Johanna is in the insurance business and is currently running for City Council.
They are two of the nicest people you could want to know. When we first started sailing 5 years ago, they welcomed us into the club and made us feel at home. Since we are just about the only members with children (our youngest was 5 at the time) we kind of kept our distance from the older folks, but Ken made sure we got involved. At his request, Michelle and I run the Ship's Store and I just organized our biggest race of the year last weekend.
You should send him a line. He often talks of his sailing in his youth. His e-mail is: knjtighe@swcp.com I am sure they'd love to hear from you.
Best wishes.

Incredible!! I had lost touch with them...their address and their email address. I will get in touch with them ASAP. They both are very nice people....have we all noticed how people who sail are generally really fine folks? Hopefully you can bring your boat out and cruise the Pacific this summer. We are waiting to get into a slip in Mission Bay and will make every effort to cruise to Catalina with Jim and the others who are interested. Thanks for the info on my "lost" friends. Gary
You are correct. It is Elephant Butte Lake, NM. While it is slowly being taken away from us by drought, environmentalist & politicians, we still have pretty good sailing. Next spring will be the deciding factor. We need some pretty serious snows this winter. Our lake has dropped over 100' in the last 2 years with nothing to replenish it. If it drops again next year, it will be left mostly as a river channel. The marinas will still float, but there will be no sailing areas. That is one reason why I bought a '25 instead of something bigger. So, I would always have the option to trailer my boat to other locations.
I told Ken about you getting in touch and he said he'd love to hear from you.
Here's Elephant Butte last Saturday. (Notice the white line on shore in the background. That's the water level when full. Maybe someday we'll see it there again).
