Is there a place to go or can someone tell me the differences between a 1976 and a 1991. The prices all seem to between $6000 and $9000 and I assumed it was based on equipment installed and condition of the boat. Why would someone rather have a newer boat is there any major upgrades that make it a better boat?
I don't know of any single source of a chronological listing of changes made to the Catalina 25 over the years. You might try using the search function on this forum though. There have been many Q&A's to your sort of question over the years.
Suffice it to say that there were many "running changes" to the boat over the years that reflected imput from dealers and owners. In addition, Catalina dealers have considerable leeway when ordering boats. The wholesale order form and price list for dealers will list the boat as a standard model with some extra gear included as part of the standard boat. Then, the order form/price list has a whole host of options that the dealer can order factory installed. So, the retail price before shipping charges for say a 1986 fk/sr would range from around $13,500 for the standard boat to around $17,000 with around 1/2 of the factory options installed. That is one of the main reason that there are so many differences between various C25s. A reasonably outfitted 1986 fk/sr C25 with trailer and ob engine would run pretty close to $22,000 after freight et al in 1986. But, you might have been able to find a factory standard boat for $4,000 or $5,000 less.
Additionally, some of the standard equipment one year might be optional another - and visa versa. That's why it's so difficult to find an accurate chronological guide. And, why there is such a wide variation in used-boat pricing today. Including some mid 80's models selling for well over $12,000 - even into the $13,500 range.
My 1978 fin keel #398 is about as old as they come. She is a great boat. Many, many upgrades have been made over the years (I am the 5th owner in 25 years). This boat is nothing like the stock boat in 1978 and I'm sure you'll find that when you start looking and comparing. For example, I have a new outboard mount, roller furling, auto pilot, all sail handling lines led aft, spinnaker, whisker pole, knot meter, GPS, compass, boarding ladder, adjustable backstay, oversize self tailing winches, 2nd genoa track, 5 sails, anchor pulpit, halogen internal lighting, solar panels, mainsail with reef points, outhaul, vang, propane galley, barbeque, cockpit table, queen sized bed conversion kit, and more.
None of these upgrades were stock from the factory. I think you get my point. There are so many owner installed options to consider.
Look at as many boats as you can. Make a checklist. When you look at a boat, check off what she is equipped with. That way you can compare them later.
The MAJOR differences in structure from Catalina are
a seperate fuel locker in 1989 they introduced the wing keel in the C 250s water ballast is available.
I believe some of the other important structural changes which are present on my '83 are: Lead keel with stainless bolts, nuts and washers rather than cast iron keel with mild steel bolts; Stronger chainplates; Heavier standing rigging, Bow nav. lights rail rather than hull mounted; Deeper anchor locker; Stainless steel spreader sockets rather than aluminum.
I'm sure there are more, but one change I wish was present on my boat is the flat cabin sole rather than that idiotic multi level affair which was in fact, designed for the swingers.
