My '84 fin keel has the original factory installed 12 volt system/panel and no AC/shore power. My wind/boat speed/depth gauge has been wired into the top switch on the electrical panel for many years, and has worked flawlessly. Yesterday, I turned the switch on, and it blew the fuse...replaced the fuse and tried again, blew the second fuse. Before it got dark, I checked all fittings and connections, they look good, and everything else 12 volt that runs through the panel works fine. Any suggestions on trouble shooting would be greatly appreciated.

Disconect the device/s from switch #1 and try another fuse. if it does not blow then it is your unit/s. Is the wind/boat speed/depth gauge a single unit? If not connect them back one at a time, if so you should send them to the manufactuer, (after you take them apart and poke around in them a while, but that is just me) for service. Manufacturers often offer upgrades when equipment is DOA.

Thanks I'll try that...the gauge is a single unit, so only one wire goes to the top terminal.

There is a short to ground, either inside your unit or (most likely) somewhere inside the wire(s) running to the unit. You can test this with a voltmeter. Avoid the temptation to just put in a bigger fuse. It may show you where the short is by burning the wires there.

Quote: "One major cause of boat fires is frayed wires..." (September issue of SAIL)

Some places you might want to check for a false ground (due to a frayed wire or corrosion):

Where the wind gauge wire enters and leaves the mast;
Corrosion on the wire to either depth meter or the paddle wheel for the speed/log meter;
A lose connection at the readout head;
Anywhere a wire travels through the bilge and is not clipped in place;
The switch could have gone bad--check by wiring to another switch;

If that fails, disconnect each recording unit and re-connect them one by one.

If you still can't find the source of the problem, forget about it and wait until spring, by which time the problem will likely have solved itself.
